I will take potshots at the genre whenever the opportunity arises, cos frankly, the majority of underground black metal is not only knee-slappingly silly, its proponents are all sorts of goofy. Generally I’m pretty apathetic to black metal, to be honest. Not because of the idea – but the subpar execution most bands in the underground in this subgenre. The endless bansheeing about Satan and assorted ‘evil’ subjects is plain tired and tiresome. Some of the lyrics the underground acts of this genre pen are worth a hoot or two. Count with that the fact that corpse paint and its usage has gone completely off the deep end, and concludingly that it takes more than a few impaled pigheads and barbed wire on stage to get people’s attention these days, or to upset them in the real sense – it’s safe to say that I have no vested interest, outside of a handful of classic bands/releases, in this genre or its players. Not that the death metal scene is any better, for that matter. Just saying. Horna is an exception of sorts as they go about their business differently. “Askel lähempänä Saatanaa” (“A Step Closer to Satan”, for those who care about that sort of thing) makes no qualms about what it is, and is never pretentious about how it goes about its business. Instead of clubbing the listener around the head with endless blastbeats and repetitive riffing Horna understand the importance of light melody, dissonant rhythms and occasionally slowing down the pace to a comfortable mid tempo. This album is the debut for new frontman Tuomas Rytkönen (Spellgoth), who replaced Corvus in 2009, who himself is the sibling of that other industrious Finn, Kassara (Darkwoods My Betrothed, Deathchain, Forgotten Horror). Rytkönen is raspier than previous frontmen and his ghastlier, deeper tones will occasionally border on death metal territory. Horna is the embodiment of the pulsating black heart of the genre. Thankfully Horna understand the early appeal that made this genre so brazenly rebel in the early ‘90s. They are what they are, and they are not silly about it. You are free to dislike them, I’m pretty sure they won’t bat an eyelash if you do, and neither do I for that matter. So, underground devil-worshippers, please take note of this record, cos this is how it is supposed to be done.
