No less than two years ago there was the tragic death of founding singer Makh Daniels. "Red Horse" marks the return of Early Graves with close friend, John Strachan, of the Funeral Pyre, taking over vocal duties. The caustic and schizophrenic vocals remind of original Leng Tch’e shrieker Isaac Roelens and At the Gates’ Tomas ‘Tompa’ Lindberg. The opening section from ‘Days Grow Cold’ is reminiscent of early Mastodon while the band’s overall direction is more akin to Converge. The melancholic and frail acoustic guitar piece that closes the song is quite effective in its heartfelt emotion. In all, it sounds like Early Graves can’t decide whether to fully go into a breakneck hardcore - or the more psychedelic/stoner direction some of their slower cuts hint at. Obviously, the more violent hardcore-oriented material is the best and this is where the band shines at - but considering the overall popularity of sludge, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see them explore that niche further. "Red Horse" was recorded in a quick 8 days with Tim Green at Louder Studios and comes with a bare bones, honest sounding production that recalls Mastodon’s "Lifesblood" in a number of aspects. Fans of Converge, earliest Mastodon, hardcore and sludge will find a lot to like here.
