Rio de Janeiro’s Grave Desecrator might very well be the answer to that. Where Sepultura (like Metallica before them) choose to adopt a more sophisticated and ambitious approach in regards to composition, instrumental skill and songwriting Grave Desecrator do not stray far from the roads paved by their influential countrymen. Stylistically similar to Peruvian alcoholocaustos Anal Vomit the black metal influences (in the riffing and vocals in particular) are far more prevalent within Grave Desecrator, albeit that both bands have a solid backbone of old school thrash metal. The screaming leads/solos are executed splendidly and with a lot of fire. The drumming and bass playing isn’t very interesting but both fulfill their obligations. Like any South American band Grave Desecrator waste no time with complex song structures and immediately hit the listener in the gut. In that sense they are like Chilean death metal warriors Perversor. Unlike Sepultura’s “Schizophrenia” there’s no inspiration drawn from traditional – and speed metal, making this record far more straightforward and easily digestable. Vocally, on the other hand, this is similar to Colombian occult metal act Inquisition. This is viscerally intense black/thrash metal that combines the inherent strengths of both genres and then adds some. Overall, “Insult” is a rather typical but throroughly convincing cauldron of black/thrash hatred in the South American tradition. The stunning cover art painting reminds of those classic Italian 1970’s gialli and horror epics. Grave Desecrator is today’s answer to South American black hordes as (earliest) Sepultura and Sarcófago.
