In 2007 they released their international debut through Shiver Records with the highly recommended "Circadian Rhythm". Now 4 years after that breakthrough record Thurisaz return on Greek label Sleaszy Rider Records with "The Cimmerian Years". As in the past the band's patented mix of dark -, doom – and atmospheric metal genres is as soothing as ever. The multitude of vocals (four of the five members share vocal duties) contribute effortlessly to this genre-bending effort. As in the past comparisons to My Dying Bride ("Like Gods Of the Sun"), Novembers Doom ("The Knowing") and to a lesser extent The Gathering ("Mandylion", "Nighttime Birds") are inevitable and perhaps expected, although Thurisaz aim clearly and confidently for atmosphere and steer clear of the inherent sugary nature of symfo metal altogether. In comparison to the band's earlier two records "The Cimmerian Years" is considerably more dynamic, compact and brutal. The last demo phase shackles have been cast off as Thurisaz now fully embrace the potential they always had. Both Novembers Doom singer Paul Kuhr ('No Regrets') and Saturnus' Thomas A.G. Jensen ('A Glance Of Misperception') make this record appealing for the international market and genre fans alike. The artwork, design and lay-out are nothing short of superb and the best the band have had to date, truly mesmerizing in its attention to detail and composition. Thurisaz is a shining example how a demo band can grow into a powerful entity all its own while staying true to its modest nature. In due course the bigger labels will come calling for Thurisaz, "The Cimmerian Years" is probably the best Belgian extreme metal record in quite a number of years. Any serious dark -, doom – and symfo metal fan should be sure to give this band a listen.
