Exhumed - All Guts, No Glory Exhumed were one of the earlier California death/grind exports to reach global fame with their distinct combination of (early) Carcass styled death metal, bits of grind and a healthy dose of German thrash metal. In 1998 they released their debut “In the Name Of Gore” to critical acclaim in the underground. Building upon that formula they released two more records, 2000’s “Slaughtercult” and 2003’s “Anatomy Is Destiny” before ceasing operations in 2005. This new album has Exhumed returning to their classic sound, one that they never deviated too much from, with a somewhat revised line-up. Veteran practitioners vocalist/guitarist Matt Harvey (Dekapitator, Gravehill) and bassist Leon del Muerte (Murder Construct, ex-Impaled, ex-Phobia) are the most commonly known, while new members Wes Caley (guitars - ex-Fatalist, ex-Uphill Battle) and Danny Walker (drums – ex-Phobia, ex-Uphill Battle) make a serviceable debut here. Overall this album is a solid affair in the style that made this band a force to be reckoned with. Roll-out single ‘As Hammer to Anvil’ is a bit misleading as this record is far heavier on the death metal than the old school thrash. The riffing is crunchy, the drumming is savagely barbaric and Harvey’s vocals are as recognizable as ever. As with any band returning after an extended hiatus not all material is equally as strong. The lead/solo work is more than commendable, reminiscent of melodic death metal as well as traditional metal. “All Guts, No Glory” misses the rabid bite and out-of-control feeling that made “Slaughtercult” and “In the Name Of Gore” so great, but on all other fronts this is more than a solid return from a veteran band in the genre. The album title is an obvious pun to UK death metallers Bolt Thrower.
