Deicide - To Hell With God The career path of Deicide has been tumultuous and uneven to say the least. After three straight genre classics in the 1990's ("Deicide", "Legion" and "Once Upon the Cross") these Florida natives fell into something of a rud, releasing a string of obligatory ("Serpents Of the Light"), uninspired ("Insineratehymn") to downright abysmal records ("In Torment, In Hell") that alienated even the most hardcore of fans. Upon signing to UK's Earache Records the band's spirit briefly bloomed in both creativity and productivity, releasing the return-to-form statement "Scars Of the Crucifix", line-up troubles ensued and upon regaining its composure the band (now featuring ex-Cannibal Corpse guitarist Jack Owen in its ranks) released their finest opus with the epic "The Stench Of Redemption" which gave them an unexpected second lease on life. Benton's ongoing personal – and marital problems, which sidelined much of the proposed touring commitments of the prior record, eventually led to the semi-conceptual "Til Death Do Us Part", a record mostly written, performed and recorded by drummer Steve Asheim, which brings us to our current subject. In regards to the general direction this new record is more in line with "Once Upon the Cross" as delivery and general feel is concerned, while the spirited execution and lyrical sharpness makes this one akin to the highly revered "Legion". Following in the footsteps of former axemen Order Of Ennead's Kevin Quirion easily matches illustrious predecessors such as Ralph Santolla and the Hoffman brothers with his fretboard walking leads/solos that ooze passion and gusto. The first Deicide album to be recorded outside the hallowed halls of Tampa, Florida's metal temple Morrissound Studios (Cannibal Corpse, Death, Obituary, Vital Remains, etc) in nearly a decade and a half. The production by Audiohammer Studios (Drawn and Quartered, Monstrosity, Order Of Ennead) is every bit as crisp as one'd expect. The ghoulish artwork is the most defiantly anti-religious they've had to date, surpassing the empty-eyed demonic serpent Christ of "The Stench Of Redemption". One can only imagine what this band would have sounded like if the supposed Vital Remains/Deicide line-up merger had happened on the eve of Benton's commitment to "Dechristianize" and its follow-up "Icons Of Evil", plus ex-Vital Remains multi-instrumentalist Dave Suzuki's session touring work for this band.
