  • Suffocation - "Blood Oath"

    Nuclear Blast Records
    USA
Suffocation - Blood Oath On their third record (and first for Nuclear Blast Records) since reforming in 2004 Long Island, New York death metallers Suffocation show that their previous two records were mere dressrehearsals for this new opus. Terrance Hobbs and Guy Marchais lay down their most unforgiving and technical guitar riffs and solos to date, bassist Derek Boyer has stepped up and shows that he can easily match Suffocation alumni Chris Richards and Josh Barohn. "Blood Oath" is the tour-de-force of Mike Smith (drums) who as never before shows peers half his age how death metal is supposed to be drummed. Frank Mullen (vocals) is in fine form and alongside George "Corpsegrinder" Fischer and Sylvain Houde (ex-Kataklysm) is amongst the best in the business, without any gurgling, burping, inhaling or cupped grunting. The gang shouts on 'Provoking the Disturbed' feel a bit out of place. Suffocation have written their most intricate and vicious material so far, while not sounding less accessible because of it. There aren't any weak songs on this record, although 'Dismal Dream', 'Pray For Forgiveness', 'Come Hell or High Priest' and 'Undeserving' do stand out significantly. Recorded at Fullforce Studio by Joe Cincotta (Catastrophic), mixed at Castle Ultimate Studio by Zack Ohren (All Shall Perish, Brain Drill, Decrepit Birth) in Oakland, California. "Blood Oath" has the smoothest and most pristine production Suffocation has had to date. The expansive artwork, design and lay-out by Jon 'Zig' Furlough is probably the most epic and accomplished he has yet created for any band. The only minor letdown is the slightly too sober booklet, which would be have a bit more elaborate. As with their self-titled record "Blood Oath" contains a re-recorded version of a "Breeding the Spawn" track, this time being the absolute genius 'Marital Decimation'. Suffocation remain the undisputed leaders of technical and compositionally brilliant death metal.
