Denial - "Catacombs Of the Grotesque"
Asphyxiate Recordings/Plastic Head Distribution
Mexico
Mexican death metal by members of Cenotaph, Shub Niggurath and Pulverized. Inspired by the writings of HP Lovecraft. "Catacombs Of the Grotesque" holds the middleground between Cenotaph's obscure and primitive sounding "The Gloomy Reflections Of Our Hidden Sorrows" and their later more abstract and technical work of "Riding Our Black Oceans". Primary influence are Mortician - there's a vibe of "Mortal Massacre" and "House By the Cemetery" in the riffing here - and Incantation, but overall Denial are faster and more complex. The cavernous vocal work is truly insane, and in that sense, similar to Sylvain Houde's tenure with Kataklysm and Avulsed's Dave Rotten. Founding member Oscar Clorio (drums) is of the Ed Warby (Gorefest), Jim Roe (Goreaphobia, Incantation) and Chris Reifert (Abscess, Autopsy) school of drumming. This more basic and functional style of drumming fits Denial's perfectly. Guitar duo Marko Guevera and Rob Granados complement each other in both the riff as lead/solo department. Recorded and mixed at Evolution Studios by Jesus Bravo. Mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound Studios (Bloodbath, Edge Of Sanity, Katatonia) in Orebro, Sweden. Artwork painted by highly acclaimed American artist Paul Carrick encapsulates Lovecraft's unearthly horrors in a terrifying vision of subterreanean morbidity. "Catacombs Of the Grotesque" is highly recommended to fans of (early) Morbid Angel, Demilich, Carnage and the likes.
