Behemoth - "The Apostasy"
Regain Records
Poland
Starting off with 'Rome, 64 c.e' - an atmospheric, peaceful female chanting intro piece - Polish death metal titans Behemoth immediately put the listener on the wrong foot. 'Slaying the Prophets Of Isa' sets the tone for the rest of the record, taking cues from "Zos Kia Cultus (Here & Beyond)" and the blisteringly intense "Demigod" finding an equilibrium reminiscent of Behemoth's own classic "Satanica" record. The triumvirate of Nergal (vocals/guitars), Orion (bass) and Inferno (drums) have once again outdone themselves and prove why this unit is perhaps Poland's longest running extreme metal act outside of Vader. Inferno lays down his fastest material to date, yet works his kit with almost machinal precision resulting in a storm of tasteful and highly technical rolls, blasts and fills. The guitar work on this record is simply outstanding, allowing each individual track to breathe similar to the band's earlier ventures into death metal. Harmonies, leads and melodies hinted on "Demigod" are drastically expanded and further explored with additional instrumentation by way of acoustic guitars, synthesizers, piano, Gregorian like choirs, horns and the likes make this the band's most ambitious record to date. 'Inner Sanctum' is Behemoth's most experimental piece to date, featuring Warrel Dane, the charismatic vocalist of Nevermore, and Leszek Mozdzer, Polish world-famous pianist. The production by Daniel Bergstrand at Dug Out Studio, Sweden (Meshuggah, In Flames, Emeth) is similar to "Demigod" but far more organic sounding. The record was mastered by Bjorn Engelmann (Rammstein, Samael). Lay-out and artwork is top notch again and continue with themes set with "Demigod". This record will cement Behemoth's position as one of the death metal genre's most illuminatory visionaries. Fantastic record!
