Be'lakor - "The Frail Tide"
Self-financed
Australia
Melbourne, Australia based Be'lakor (taking its moniker from a demon character of the Warhammer Fantasy tabletop game) have delivered an impressive EP with "the Frail Tide" as it perfectly encapsulates everything which makes European, folk based pagan metal so strong. Taking cues from Sweden's Thyrfing and Ireland's Primordial these Australians have carefully crafted melodies, interchanging electric and acoustic sections, additional instrumentation by way of a piano/synthesizer with gruff growls, somewhat familiar to Sweden's Shape Of Despair, which provide each of these 6 cuts with epicness not often heard from a band this young. The riffs often bounce from genre to genre with incredible fluency, fusing traditional heavy metal riffs and melodies with the desolate somberness inherit to the pagan metal genre. 'Neither Shape nor Shadow' illustrates this rather nicely, from the traditional metal in the opening riff, to the chugging Swedish guitar work that make up the majority of the cut, to the typical pagan metal riffs and harmonies that fill up the remaining void. 'the Desolation Of Ares' is slower and more melancholic track, making Be'lakor easily classifiable as atmospheric doom metal to a certain degree. The production is worked out in incredible detail with a guitar sound that possesses enough punch, clarity and grittiness this material needs. The bass sits thickly in the mix, only the drums sound a bit on the sterile side but this can easily be tweaked out next time around. Artwork, lay-out and design look professionally rendered and fits the record like a glove. The booklet is lushly designed containing lyrics, band pictures and recording info. Be'lakor has all traits a young band could wish for and I wouldn't be surprised if a respectable label offers them a contract soon.
