Dying Fetus - War Of Attrition Death metal powerhouse Dying Fetus return with their long-awaited new record "War Of Attrition". Quite some slight line-up changes (i.e. Duane Timlin behind drumkit, so excellent!!!) but nonetheless it doesn't affect the tightness and brutality of the latest offering at all. Masterminded by guitarist/vocalist John Gallagher and his hand picked kill-team, "War Of Attrition" advances the band's devastating assault and destroys everything in its path. Opening with "Homicidal retribution", the band makes pretty clear what they're about: brutal hyperspeed technical death metal with hardcore-esque breakdowns combined with thrash-influenced riffs, of course with the occasional yet typical synchronized guitar-tapping on both guitars and bass. While at "Stop At Nothing" the boundaries of speed were touched every now and then, the band proves to be capable of more on "War Of Attrition": faster and more aggressive seems to be the task John Gallagher gave his bandmates. Production-wise the new album makes a huge leap forward, a wall of sound belts out of the speakers with a machinegun-like-rattling put underneath it by the new drummer Duane Timlin (ex-Divine Empire, Broken Hope, Sarcophagus (US), Weltmacht, Forest Of Impaled, session for Krieg and Judas Iscariot). Everything sounds perfect. The machine-like perfection at such high speed probably leaves first time listeners thinking songs like "Parasites Of Catastrophe" are not even played by human, but completely done by computers... but fortunately it's not! An amazing album that will please a large number of extreme death/grind fans and will apply to math/core fans too. "War Of Attrition" reaches an altogether new and focused level of brutality for Dying Fetus and expands the legendary status of this renowned US death metal institution.
