Suffocation - "Suffocation"
Relapse Records
USA
While 2004's comeback effort "Souls to Deny" wasn't a bad album by any stretch of the imagination. It did leave many Suffocation fans unfulfilled, musically, as the record was written in a hasty manner due to pending commitments. Now, after 2 years of extensive global touring Suffocation return to show the world the true meaning of technical death metal. First thing to notice is that the production work on this record is truly outstanding and in that way can compete with 1995's "Pierced From Within". The band sounds more together on this self-titled effort and the level of precision, accuracy and brutality will leave your jaw on the floor. Frank Mullen's downright mean vocals here sound more deep and convincing than on their previous outing. Drummer Mike Smith perhaps has the best drum sound since 1991's milestone "Effigy Of the Forgotten". Guitarist duo Terrance Hobbs and Guy Marchais possess a monstrous guitar tone that is both thick and clear. The duo plays each other off well and Doug Cerrito is never missed. Closing this record is 'Prelude to Repulsion' - a re-recorded classic from 1992's phenomenal but criminally underrated "Breeding the Spawn" album. Suffocation have delivered the best album in their career with this self-titled effort. The artwork by underground/tattoo artist Jon Zig is surprisingly atmospheric and brooding in comparison to the rest of his output. All those who still had their doubts about the band with "Souls to Deny" are advised to take a listen to this record.
