Deicide - "The Stench Of Redemption"
Earache Records
USA
After a few years of truly uninspired material and pedestrian, highly inconsistent records (2000's "Insineratehymn" and 2001's "In Torment, In Hell") US death metal institution Deicide signed with Earache Records, resulting in 2004's awe-inspiring return-to-form "Scars Of the Crucifix". In late 2004 the band parted ways with guitarist duo Brian and Eric Hoffman after more than a decade, subsequently replacing the brothers with highly skilled, experienced genre luminaries Jack Owen (ex-Cannibal Corpse) and Ralph Santolla (ex-Death, ex-Iced Earth). "The Stench Of Redemption" is the first result of this new line-up and Deicide's now more mean, technical and defiantly blasphemous as on their legendary self-titled debut record. Recorded at Morrisound Studios "The Stench Of Redemption" is without doubt the most compact, heavy and bone-dusting Deicide record yet. Benton sounds more guttural and invigorated - one could almost assume that his work for Vital Remains on 2003's "Dechristianize" has positively rubbed off on him. Owen and Santolla lay down a dense complex yet vastly superior guitar foundation in the tracks through which drummer Steve Asheim pounds with relentless frenzy. This is possibly Asheim's moment of glory as this record sees him in fine form, delivering his most diverse and technical work to date. "The Stench Of Redemption" is a landmark for Deicide in a number of ways: the first with their new line-up, the first to tread proverbial uncharted (slightly more melodic, ever more technical and uncompromising) waters with improved songwriting and even a few truly epic cuts. This albums is bound to leave its mark on the scene the band helped shape and in time will become equally - if not more important as the band's 1992 vintage genre-defining classic "Legion". Don't be left behind, experience the future of death metal today!
