    V/A Lugburz Compilation - (volume 3 Introduction:
Since 1997 Lugburz has been an influential stepping stone for the Belgian underground extreme metal scene. Organizing several festivals, releasing a number of compilations and always pushing the scene to new, unprecedented heights. Being the original Belgian underground platform focusing mainly on the black metal genre, Lugburz recently released their third compilation effort, on their own label imprint, no less.

    Review:
Kicking off the newest installment of this series is Aguynguerran, crude war-like black metal in vein of early Enthroned which houses some great high-speed Celtic Frost inspired riffing. Bunker brings thumping bass-heavy doomy black metal, Winter is a definite influence here. Creature is further developed on their demo production level and generally heavier on the death metal influence all around. Garmenhord has pre-"Vulcano" Satyricon as influence. Mid-tempo black metal with epic song structures and riffs. Certainly feels like "The Shadowthrone" sung in Dutch. Credit to the vocalist for both maintaining his eerie vocal style, while still remaining decipherable. Gorath continues in a similar vein, but is more progressive all around. Histoire Noire is rather chaotic and primitive. This reminds a lot of the earlier outputs of Norwegian genre veterans Gorgoroth. Iconoclasm is a bit more old school oriented and thrashier to say the least, very convincing. Kludde is another act singing in their native tongue. 'De Paardenneukeraar' reeks a lot of "Dark Endless" and "Those Of the Unlight" era Marduk. Quite solid but severely non-descript, actually. Lemuria is full of epic metal riffs and folk inspired melodies, with varied drum work and some mildly interesting synthesizers to boot. You heard it all before, but it's a good take at the folk black metal genre made popular by acts such as Finntroll, Manegarm or Lumsk. Morrigu is the proverbial odd man out on the compilation, being female-fronted mid nineties European death metal. Reminds a lot of Bolt Thrower with occasional "Mindloss" era Gorefest riffing and dynamics. They never are reaching any kind of momentum or climax in delivery or songwriting, thus leaving a bitter aftertaste. Satyrus have a strange Danny Elfman vibe in their ghostly synthesizer work. Quite cliché trebling lo-fi black metal where the drum computer drowns out the rest of the questionable mix. Stormkraai is another Gorgoroth adept. Definitely underground, possibly evil, certainly raw black metal fanatics can't go wrong with this. Theudho is more developed in production, songwriting and instrumentation. This is quite an epic track to say the least. Wanhoop closes out with 'The End' - a well-deserved mid paced inspired black-ish doom metal piece.

    General conclusion:
Overall, the quality is pretty consistent on this compilation. Underground black metal fanatics are highly advised to check out this album. Another good job by the folks of Lugburz.
