  • Aura Noir - "The Merciless"

    2004 / 3cd
    Tyrant Syndicate/Peaceville Records

Aura Noir - The Merciless Billing themselves as "unholy black thrash", which is quite an accurate description, as their style an punishing form of retro thrash (early Kreator or Destruction) with contemporary and black-metallish vocals. Consisting of Apollyon (vocals/bass, Cadaver/Dodheimsgard), Aggressor (rhythm guitar, Cadaver/Dodheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende) and Blasphemer (guitar, Mayhem/Mezzerschmitt) Aura Noir have secured a steady line-up of competent, experienced musicians. "The Merciless" is the band's fourth album to date - since I'm not familiar with their earlier works I can't really compare the overall evolution the band has gone through over the years. While sounding obviously retro thrash a lot of tracks remind of the Scandinavian black metal spirit of old, think of the great No Fashion Records bands of the early to mid nineties. Damp, bleak and oppressive in nature. Aura Noir's not overly complex music will appeal to thrash metal fans old and new, as the record forms a synthesis of influential bands such as Kreator, Destruction, Celtic Frost and the likes. The record's major selling point might as well form its biggest downfall, in a genre that has hardly evolved since the mid '80s one can hardly expect anything new or exciting to find two decades after its inception. Look beyond this and you'll have a great no-holds barred old school thrash metal album to sink your teeth into, bringing back the glorious days when bands like Nocturnal Breed, Lobotomy, etc reigned supreme. The title track - placed as last track on the album, really old school - should prove that thrash metal essentially gave birth to the more extreme genres that became popular years after. Fans of the musicians involved and old school fanatics in general can collectively rejoice with this unpretentious album.
