Inveracity

Wywiad przeprowadził - Wouter Roemers
Last April Greek death metallers Inveracity have seen the worldwide release of their second album through California death metal specialist label Unique Leader Records. "Extermination Of Millions" - their debut for the label - is filled with technically proficient, utterly relentless death metal Masterful Magazine found the time right to catch up with Inveracity drummer Vagelis Voyiantzis. He was eager to talk about their new album, the details of their contract with Unique Leader Records and how he perceives the Greek extreme metal scene. First off, I'd like to thank you for taking time to speak with me today. Congratulations for releasing such a great album! How are things going now? Are you receiving a good response?

Thanks a lot. The response we are getting from people worldwide for the new album has been more than satisfying.

Having received many good reviews in magazines and webzines from across the globe, do you feel that judging by what people have said about your new material it has achieved the impact you thought it would?

When we finished composing the material for "Extermination of Millions" we were sure that we have a good album to release. There were many people eagerly waiting for what we would put out after "Circle of Perversion". So, judging from the good reviews we are definitely satisfied with the impact the new album achieved.

What was the main difference regarding the process of creation between "Circle of Perversion" and this "Extermination of Millions", and how did that come out in the end result?

This time we recorded with a metronome and it was the main difference in the recording process. The recording was fast and convenient this way, so we had the chance to put more time in mixing and mastering.

How long have you been working on the material for this album?

It's been three years.

In what way do you feel that you have improved since the debut?

In terms of playing better, being able to have more complete song structures even if the tracks remain short in time and achieving what we want being in the studio.

Which bands had a strong impact on your music and writing? Personally speaking, what comes to mind first is Deeds Of Flesh or Decrepit Birth...

I wouldn't say Decrepit Birth so much, but you definitely hear a Deeds influence. Other that that it's old Monstrosity, old Suffocation, Broken Hope, the first Hate Eternal, the Vile debut and more. We're into old school brutal death.

How do you write songs, is there a central songwriter in the band or does everybody contribute something to the process?

Antonis comes up with the riffs and then we all contribute in terms of song writing and arrangements.

The new record sounds incredibly tight. About how much do you guys practice on average?

We rehearse about three times a week, sometimes even more. Before recording the new cd we even practised the new tracks with a metronome, but in my opinion this is not the only thing that makes a band tight.

The music is unbelievably aggressive and militant - were you in a particularly pissed-off mood when recording this new album?

Death metal is all about aggression. I'd say the feeling comes from when you make the music. When you record it you better be calm so you come up with a straight out good result. But the existence of feelings like that in the music is what makes us keep a track and go further.

This album comes to us by way of the respectable Unique Leader Records, you released a split EP with Insision in 2001 through Nuclear Winter Records and your 2003 debut CD "Circle Of Perversion" was released through Unmatched Brutality Records. Have you noticed any differences between the labels so far? Are you happy the way Unique Leader handled the record, regarding promotion, distribution and marketing?

Labels are labels. Now with the amount of people downloading music from the Internet it's good if you are in a respectable label you get more exposure. This can help you get more offers for festivals and touring. Other than that you can get a satisfying or not deal. UL has a good distribution, but promotion could be better for "Extermination". I was surprised to see people didn't know it was actually out.

The Greek death/black metal scene is well respected worldwide with veteran bands like Necromantia, Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, Thou Art Lord, Varathron and Zemial coming to mind, alongside new talent such as Sickening Horror. What are your reactions to the scene today? Are there any bands that you feel are not being recognized that should be?

The scene is pretty good here. There are plenty of killer bands but if you want to be recognized you have to run after it. A band that should get some more exposure in would be Extreme Violence, if you ask me.

From 8th August till 30th August 2008 you’ll be embarking on the Blast Corpse Promotion (www.bcp-agency.com) organised "Gutting Europe V" tour with Malta’s Beheaded, American death metal combo Inherit Disease and Germany’s Suffocate Bastard. I guess you're stoked to get this material out there on the various stages?

That's right. We are fucking stoked to this tour with all those lunatics. It's been 3 years since our last tour and we can't wait to bomb the stages with the new shit.

Greek law obliges people to join the Army for one year before they turn 28. After the release of "Extermination of Millions" the band has since joined ranks. With that term now drawing to an end, what are you plans for the band?

We are done with that right now. The army in Greece is a total waste of time. We had to cancel a bunch of festivals for no reason. Now they want to change the law and make people join the army when they turn 18. Much better this way. Now that we left all that behind, we'll play Deathfeast Open Air, do the tour and start writing material for the third album.

What are you doing outside of the band? Any interesting jobs, studies, hobbies?

Some of us are sound engineers. We have our normal jobs and other than that we just get wasted, having fun and try to get to places full of chicks.

Thanks for the interview! Good luck with all your future endeavours. I would like to extend my praise for a killer second album. Last words are up to you.

Thanks for the interview and the killer words. Hope we meet and have a beer when we show up in Poland this summer. Cheers!
