First of all, we feel it necessary to clarify a fundamental point. Kickback is and has always been an artistic, musical and performative project, which does not involve a political programme or activist undertaking, and is not driven by an ideological mindset.
Your letter is based on several presuppositions, notably the idea that a hardcore band should necessarily support, articulate or defend specific political values, presuppositions that we don't share. Hardcore [punk] has never constituted an ideologically homogeneous bloc, and Kickback was deliberately developed on the margins of normative discourse, whether moral or political.
Our lyrics, references, quotations and provocations stem from an artistic work based on negativity, confrontation and ambiguity. They constitute neither professions of faith, nor slogans, nor declarations of adherence. To equate portrayal, quotation or provocation with political commitment amounts to a reductive reading that we cannot endorse,
In these circumstances, we won't respond to questions that assume or insinuate political positions we have never claimed, nor to those relating to private lives, individual practices taken out of context, or interpretations of activities on social media.
We wanted to provide these clarifications in order to avoid any erroneous reading of the nature and meaning of the Kickback project.
