I remember my first thought after The 3rd Attempt's concert at BLASTFEST this year - 'Who needs the new CARPATHIAN FOREST album when we've got this?!'. And indeed, I hold on to that statement now when their first record, 'Born in Thorns' is about to be released. This is a textbook example how to make a debut album - with a big bang and clear determination.
As it happens with many new releases I've heard recently, the band gets straight to the point immediately assuring you what the fuss is all about. 'Torment Nation' reminds you why we all love the good old black'n'roll. When I first heard it at the band's listening session in London, I knew exactly what to expect. The undeniable aggression combined with the great experience of musicians are definitely principles of 'Born in Thorns'. The album is far from being predictable, it surprises you with every song and the more you listen to it, the easier it is to find those tasteful moments.
Obviously, the Carpathian Forest aura is ubiquitous. Don't be fooled, however, because The 3rd Attempt is so much more than the classic Norwegian atmosphere contained in black metal havoc. Some of the tracks on 'Born in Thorns' were originally written by Tchort for Carpathian Forest's 'Fuck You All!!!' album. This does not bother the new material overwhelm you with freshness and novelty included in each song. Some of them have definitely got this 'hit' factor which makes The 3rd Attempt a great live band as well.
As soon as you get to the title track, you check the player if it hasn't done you a trick and changed the band. The enigmatic intro takes you straight to the most surprising moment on the album. The death metal quality and rhythm add a lot to the album making it much more varied and, as I said, less predictable. Talking about variety I can't miss Ødemark's skilful vocals presenting different aesthetics - from dirty black metal screams to semi-clean chants. And that scream at the beginning of 'Necrogrammaton'... This is what I call the pure black metal energy!
Also, the album is full of bewitching slowdowns like the one in 'Beast Within'. Moments like that just automatically make your head go up and down. It's great to hear how smoothly the band combines them with fast and blasting sections changing the tempo quite often. You get the feeling that everything seems to be intact - every riff, every hit of the drums. Well, this is an expected result when you blend the experience and passion and merge it with evil and abhorrence. I just couldn't have said that more accurately.
'Born in Thorns' is one of those albums that makes it impossible for you to pick your favourite song. Also, this is definitely that kind of record which, even before it's released, makes you want another album from the band. There is so much potential in The 3rd Attempt and I am sure that the band will spread the plague around with the upcoming shows.
9.5/10
