    2003 / (volume 1) DVD
    Relapse Records
V/A - Recollection American label Relapse Records have since day and age been in the spearheading position to continuously release groundbreaking acts that shatter genre conventions and push the envelope of extremity to new, unprecedented heights. On their first DVD release the label delivers a bombardment of captivating videos including fast-action clips from current label heavyweights High On Fire, Neurosis, Unsane, and The Dillinger Escape Plan, up-and-comers Alabama Thunderpussy and Alchemist, and long-time conspirators Amorphis and Brutal Truth amongst others. With about 16 videos - Neurosis and Amorphis have two videos, each - there's too much material to review each one separately, to that end alone I'll mention the stand out videos that everyone should at least see once. 'First Contact' from Australian progressive death metal act Alchemist mixes image of the band playing live with psychedelic imagery and a short narrative which lives out the track's lyrical premise. Technical metalcore outfit The Dillinger Escape Plan delivers an all-out aural assault with the most energetic live footage to date. Basic but effective. Grindcore pioneers Brutal Truth break genre conventions by all means with 'Dead Smart' - with a video that has almost a Motorhead-ish feel to itself. Blood Duster does the same with their cut 'Porno Store Stiffi' as being the most "gangsta/rap" video to date. Death metal forefathers Deceased on the other hand bring a shot-on-video macabre horror story intertwined with the band playing live in the night. Finland's Amorphis with 'Black Winter Day' deliver a classic death metal video: smoke, fire and the band playing live in dark surroundings. Neurosis' 'Under the Surface' perfectly embodies the band's droning tribal post-metal with a bright use of color and spiritual imagery. Concluding, Dead World's 'The Machine' has the feel of an old German propaganda movie which fits perfectly with the band's mechanical death/doom. This DVD step by step maps out Relapse Records as one of the most progressive extreme metal labels of current times - this is a quintessential release for people who thoroughly enjoy the acts this label houses. With some additional fine-tuning and streamlining this DVD series can become the standard for metal compilation videos.
