Death metal gods are back! First read this interview, then go and buy "Gateways To Annihilation" which is definitely the piece of art. No more introduction is needed here. I'm really proud of presenting you this interview with one of those morbid angels - Tucker!!! Morbid Angel is one of the most important bands at the death metal scene. Do you think "Gateways To Annihilation" is approval of that?- We feel very strong about "Gateways To Annihilation, otherwise we would not release it!!! Morbid Angel takes every song of every record
very seriously and would never release anything that did not make us happy!!!
Music you present on "Gateways..." isn't so fast & aggressive as your previous CDs.- Every song isn't fast but there are some very fast songs on the record, Morbid Angel is a very diverse band and we play what comes from the soul, never worrying about if it is fast, slow, or if it is differant from what the trend is. We play what we feel!!!
Some people may say you aren't the same great band they loved before. Aren't you affraid of that?- Ha, ha,ha, no we aren't afraid of that at all, that is rediculous, Morbid Angel has always done what we want and always will , if we spend
our time being worried about trying to please other peoples tastes instead of playing from the soul , which is what got Morbid Angel to this status in the first place, then the music would never expand , we would then be followers ,not leaders, and that is not Morbid Angel!!
Pete Sandoval doesn't play so fast at your new material. I miss his hiperblasting speeds! So, can I still call him - "comando"!?- Well, he got the name Commando due to his machine gun like double bass playing, so you decide that. And I think Pete would argue that he is playing very fast ,it just isn't all blast, there is a lot of double bass work that is faster than anything he has ever done..
There is a new element in your music. I'm talking about the intro which could be used by every industrial band. Do you like industrial or darkwave music?- Ha, ha, ha, that is actually very funny ,the intro is not at all industrial, it is quite the opposite actually, it is frogs from the swamps in Florida where we live, that is total nature and there is nothing industrial about it!! I think you percieve things the way you choose to. No I am not into industrial or dark wave music...
Despite the fact "Gateways..." is a little bit slower album, the production still kills! Has T rey ever thought about his own studio, where he could record other bands?- To be honest ,I really don't know ,but I don't think Trey would want to bothered, he is a very personal being, and does not neccessarily enjoy people.
Let's talk about Erik Rutan. He was recording "Domination" album with you, but he wasn't in the band while recording the "FFF" album. Now, he is back. What's his position in the band at the moment?- He is a full member of Morbid Angel!!! (what a long and interesting answer! - mk)
What do you think about Erik's second band - Hate Eternal? Aren't you jealous that he may have less time for Morbid Angel?- Jealous?? NO not at all, Erik does Hate Eternal between Morbid Angel tours and records.
What can you tell me about the lyrical concept of "Gateways..."? Do you still worship The Ancient Ones?- The Ancient Ones is only a label, but yes, I think that you could definately say that. Every man must find his own godheads or being that
give him power , so names are very limiting to this idea, but as an overall I think just saying the ancient ones is a safe, easy way of putting
it.
OK, tell me now about your nearest plans, please. What about X-MASS FESTIVALS 2000?- We will tour the U.S. In November and early December, then do the X-mass festivals the rest of December.
I know the supporting bands will be: Hypocrisy, Children Of Bodom, The Crown, Behemoth (POL)...- Yes that is correct, I think it will be a great tour, I really like Hypocrisy , and we have toured with The Crown, so it will be a good one.
I saw you live at the Wacken Open Air 2000. I wish you more so great festivals! Thanx for your time!!! Bye!!!- Yeah!!! Wacken was a great festival and I hope we do more like it too!!! It was very unforgetable for me!!! Thanks a lot, see you on tour!!!
