Espaniola, senioritas, sun, beach, alcohol. Just great! Ooo, something's wrong here ! What's that noise ? Who are these guys? Hey, where are you taking me ?!
Don't touch me, don't touch me !! Take this razor out of me!! Aaaaaaa... Uh, where am I ? Who are you doctor ? I recognize you... You're Dave, Dave Rotten, from Avulsed ! You're that one who did't like my questions for the interview... Sorry, but I'm always honest in my opinion. What ? Hey, take it easy, don't be angry!! Don't do it!! I can explain everything ! "Aaaggghhhhrr!!" Nooo...
Hail Dave. How did it happen that you got interested in butchery, sorry in metal music?"It was like in 1984/85 when I started listening to some Spanish metal bandas like BARON ROJO, LENO, OBUS, etc, but soon I discovered bands like KREATOR, CELTIC FROST, ONSLAUGHT, etc and since then I've been 100% into Detah Metal, although I also like the old Heavy Metal classics where W.A.S.P. is my absolutely fave band!!"
Avulsed have recently released their second album "Stabwound orgasm". It was recorded in Germany and mastered in the USA. Why?
"Originally we thought about recording it at Abyss Studios, but we found out that some of the Death Metal bands they recorded didn't get the sound we wanted. Bands like NATRON or FLESHCRAWL got good producitons, but the overall sound it too clean and synthetic for our taste. we wanted something more brutal and aggressive, so then we thought about Sunlight, but... you know, we would have hated ourselves if we would have come from there with that typical Sunlight sound, so we finally opted for a studio that nobody knew, but that offered us warranty that the production was going to be great. The only extreme band that recorded before us was ANCIENT RITES, but you see, their sound is the opposite of us!! So far the production sound really intense, heavy, pounding... and not similar to any other band in my opinion. As for the masteringwe also thought about studios in Sweden like Polar or Cutting Room, but when I knew that James Murphy was so cheap, I didn't hesitate it a second. besides that, he's got a name and that also helps!!"
It sounds a little bit like the first album of IMMOLATION. Did you do it on purpose?"Mmmm...?? What?? Really?? You're the very first one who tell me this...!! No, I don't think our produciton is similar to IMMOLATION's first album... I think our guitars sounds a lot more dynamic and heaiver in all ways. I don't say the IMMOLATION production was bad, in fact it's the album I like the most, because the 2nd & 3rd have quite average productions."
This album contains more melody and it is less brutal than the previous releases... It is annoying..."Ha, ha!! So you're one of these who think that the fact that there is melody in a song, means less brutality, right?? Well, if you carefully listen to our previous stuff, you can see that our brutal parts are faster, more intense and of course more brutal than ever before!! Listen to songs like "Exorcismo Vaginal" or "Stabwound Orgasm" and tell me if they're more brutal than before or not. Or are you deaf?? (no, I'm not !!-re) And not only this, in every song we include brutal parts!! Well, yes, we have also added more melody than before, but that's the good thing about this album!! We don't have to follow any standard!! We mix brutality & melody in a way that most of the bands don't dare and perhaps this is the secret of our success!! Who's annoying now??"
I am, still... Why is "Stabwound..." so long? Wouldn't it have been better to record a shorter but more consolidated and thus heavier album."It's because after three years we wanted to offer a full length with only AVULSED songs. I wouldn't like to release such a short album with just 8 songs and less than 30 minutes... It wouldn't be worth. Besides that, this album, despite the fact that last for almost 55 min., sounds refreshing, entertaining and catchy. there are bands that you can't remember any single riff after listening to it or just imagine an album of 50 min. of that kinf od ultra-brutal bands... Our album is long & consolidated, thus a fucking
heavy album!!"
I seems to me that lately Avulsed became a little 'softer'. Furthermore, you have released a CD with techno remixes. I think you're sending the wrong message to the orthodox metal fans."FUCK!! it looks like you've got a weird point of view!! We're not softer!! Please, next time that you make an interview, try to listen the albums more than once, OK?? Listen to our album and you'll see it's far more brutal, heavy & intense than before!! This is undeniable!!(I listened to it more then onece, I'm sure, And I'm still thinking you're playing softer-red). The techno remixes were just an experiment between one album and another, love it or hate it. We love it, that's why we did it and self-financed!! We're not about sending any messages, we don't really give a shit about orthodox metal fans!! Or do you mean narrow Minded metal fans who thing that hold the only truth?? If so, then fuck them!! "Cybergore" wasn't made for orthodox people that only criticise everything that's not what they like...
When can we expect a live presentation of "Stabwound..."?"In Poland?? I don't know... for this year 2000 we don't have any plans for touring Europe, only America, but who knows in the year 2001 we'll play over there. The nearest we've played was the Czech Republic in '97 with INCANTATION."
I have to admit that the cover artwork of this album is awesome. Congratulations. Where did you get those chicks?"Mmmm.... aren't you going to tell me that the cover is softer as well?? Why not?? (hey, I just said that I like the cover!!!-red)The chicks were taken from some porno mag or something. I don't know, because it was a Danish artist who did the cover & whole design."
Avulsed is being released by your own label Repulse rec. Were you ever accused of abusing it to promote your own band?"Yes, I'm being accused right now!! What's wrong with releasing your own band in your own label??
It's clear that AVULSED was the most popular Death
Metal band in Spain before we signed to REPULSE REC., so the choice was easy. Besides that, I can take better control of our promotion and distribution."
Not so long ago appeared an album containing your old and rare recordings. Which ones?"It's called "Seven Years Of Decay" and was released in September '99 by a colombian label called QUIRÓFANO PROD.. it came out in a nice digi-pack with tons of info about the band and 16 songs taken from our demo '92, demo '93, two exclusive songs from a compilation, our promo'95, some rare recordings from '96 & '98 and a live cover version of ASPHYX from '93."
On "Stabwoun..", there are two songs very untypical for Avulsed. The first one, which reminds of the Gotheborg style, and the last one with the hidden keyboard outro. I'm not even trying to imagine if you're going to take the same road on the next album..."With the first song... do you mean the instrumental intro?? If so, then I can't find these Gotheborg influences... if you mean the song "Stabwound Orgasm", then... please listen to it again... As for the hidden keyboard outro, it's just that, an outro!! These are the same keyboards we used on the intro, but nothing else!! Why are you so malicious and sceptical with your questions??"
Mmmm...?? What?? Really?? You're the very first one who tell me this...!! Lately, there's been a lot of very interesting death metal albums and bands. Which of them do you regard as worth the attention?"I think albums from bands like ANGEL CORPSE, NILE, DYING FETUS, SUP, EMPEROR, SAMAEL... There are many of them worth to mention..."
How does an average day of a death metal maniac Dave Rotten look like?"I wake up at 7:00 am and then I bring my wife to his work with my car. then I go to the posto office, send some parcels, get some money and then at 10:00 or so I start working at REPULSE until 20:00 when i go back home or go to rehearse with AVULSED (three days a week). This is from Monday to friday. On weekends i do many different things, mainly spend the time with my wife."
I don't even want to ask ,what are you doing at that time together, ha, ha. Is it possible that your last name "Rotten" is your nickname?"Of course, it is!!"
To most Spain brings the thoughts of the beautiful dark haired senioritas. What are they like?"Yes, most are like that. In fact my wife is like that, ha, ha!! Spanish women are quite beautiful in general!! After being in almost every European country, I can say we've got some of the nicest women in general!!"
You've got to visit Poland, you'll change your opinion for sure! How's the Spanish underground doing? I know of only Fermento and Reincarnation...."The Spanish scene is quite good I think. There are very good bands over here. Ths first one you mentioned don't belong to our scene. They marginate themselves and don't support anyone so they're not supported by anyone. They wanted to have that attitude since the beginning, so they're getting what they deserve, the despise of everybody. As for the rest of the bands, we have them of all kinds and with very good quality. The only bad thing is that they don't know how to promote themselves outside our cuntry unless they sign to REPULSE, because then we do that work..."
A lot of people get Repluse rec confused with Relapse rec because of the similarly sounding names. Is that bothering you?"Not at all. It's just a problem of dislexy. I would recommend them to learn how to read... simple as that."
I think that's it. Thanx for the interview. The last words for the readers of Mesterful maga'zine belong to you!!!
"Hey, you wrote Mesterful!! Don't you know how to write your mag name?? Ha, ha!! Now I know how there is people that get confused with Repulse & Relapse, ha, ha!! (aaggghhhhrrrr!!! - red).Thanx for the interview, it was kind of irritating, but well, at least I had the opportunity to give untypical answers!! I would recommend you not to be so narrow minded and please, listen to the CD's of the bands you're going to interview in the future, OK?? Otherwise you'll do senseless questions like on this one... Thanx for your support, support Death Metal and anyone interested in contacting me, just write to:"
