Ungodly
Wywiad przeprowadził Aleksander Krzeczkowski
These five, hate-filled Brazilians play superb satanic death metal in the old school manner. Being impressed by their three-track promo, and knowing absolutely NOTHING about them I decided to do this interview. The result is numb and too short a little but let their music speak and you'll find all you need to know about them.
We'll start off with a boring question - please give us a short introduction to your history. I know Ungodly members play also in other quite well known bands. How did it happen that you all met in one band?
Daniel Oliveira (g) - Hail!!! This question is a little tiring to answer, but let’s go. The band started in the middle of 2001. As soon as the members started to demand more from each other, the band achieved an attitude of professionalism. From then on, it has been getting better and better.
After three years of existence you have finally recorded a splendid three track promo. Have you got any songs left beside this?
Thank you for your kind words. We are in the composition process for our debut. We will probably enter the studio at the end of February 2005.
Worth mentioning is the fact that Patrick Tremblay made a cover art for you...
Patrick is an excellent artist and the natural result was astonishing. We can say that working with Patrick was simple, straightforward and effective.
I must admit I find a lot of old and newer Deicide influences in your music. Would you agree? Are there any bands you would especially point as an inspiration for you?
A lot of people cite Deicide as a great influence to Ungodly, though I’m not familiar with the sound. I respect their work but would say that our biggest influences are Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Metallica (old), Slayer (old) Kreator, Dissection, Death, Morbid Angel etc...
There is a long, slow, doom-metal-like part in a second track. Will there be more similar parts on your future releases? I must admit it gives a lot of nice diversity to the whole mcd.
Probably. We never do a song thinking if it will be doom, death or black. We do it with the feeling the moment asks for and that comes from within us.
Have you had any proposals from labels yet? Did you try to interest any?
We haven’t had any proposals yet. I think the best for us now is to start an independent label, so we can release our debut through it.
What does Brazilian scene look like nowadays? What kind of metal is the most popular at the moment there?
The scene here is pretty strong, but not united. It is like a jungle, one after the throat of the other. The biggest CD seller is Melodic Metal, but Death and Black metal are becoming stronger on a daily basis.
Are there any serious conflicts on your scene or something like that?
Intrigues? (laughter). What we see here is very sad. There is a minority of bands that try to unite themselves to make a strong scene. However, the scene is still infested with envious people, with low ethical standards. I think is will be hard for us to have a united scene, but there is still hope for some improvement.
Have you ever had any troubles because of your satanic attitude in your country? How seriously do you take it?
We are not Satanists, just do not support and buttress a lie that has been going on for 2 thousand years. Not to mention other religions that are out there.
Brazil is also a country with a reach ethnical background. Are you devoted in any way to your roots?
You should realize our band’s name. We are non believers. Despite the fact that we are Brazilians and respect our culture, we do not cultivate any religious feelings amongst us. We love our country, we think is the best one in the world to live in.
How does your concert activity look like? I heard you shared the scene with such monsters like Destruction and Krisiun. And what is Ungodly on the stage like?
Yes, we have played with them, Destruction and Krisiun. The gig with Krisiun, on 30-04-2004, was sensational. It is kind of hard to analyze how we are on stage. Let’s just say we are one of the worst things a Christian would like to see playing music.
Tell us in the end about your plans for the nearest future.
Now we are focus on our debut. We have a tour lined up for 2005.Thanks a lot for your time! We appreciate your help, not only with Ungodly but with all the metal scene.
