Gorerotted
Wywiad przeprowadził Aleksander Krzeczkowski
"Only tools and corpses", second Gorerotted's step after "Mutilated in minutes", sqeezed me into the ground even more then their debut album. Looks like we've got a great succesors of Carcass and Napalm Death here and another band that handles the duty of extreme music leader in London - the city that is the heart of punk and grind core. Guitarist Fluffy hasn't the slightest doubt as to that.
Fluffy: "Thanks man thats a great thing to say!!! Yeah I would say we are one of the leaders of extreme music in the whole UK, not just London!!! Carcass is RIP and Napalm Death/Benediction/Bolt Thrower are just doing the same old boring shit so I'd like to think that Gorerotted is flying the flag for UK extreme metal. We bring some new blood and new ideas to the scene!!!"
"Only tools.." is also your first album for Metal Blade. I'm pretty sure they are very satisfied of this colaboration and they are not going to get rid off you soon. And what is your opinion about Metal Blade?
"They heard the album before they signed us so I guess that are totally happy with it!!! We've met the European boss and some of the staff on the Pungent Stench tour and those guys seem really cool!!! I've spoke to a lot of the girls that work in the USA office by phone, they all sounded nice so I got them to email photos over to me. Forgot the big fat German guys at the European office, you need to talk to the blonde girls in the USAoffice. Nice!!!!!"
It's great to hear a band having so much entertain while playing extreme music. Many metalheads complain about reiteration of current metal scene - and here you are - as fresh as a cold morning shower. What's the secret?
"The secret is we like to have a good time, we have that attitude of Motley Crue, Guns And Roses or Ozzy Osbourne, heavy metal music is about having fun, drinking and rock and roll, its a fucking escape from the rest of the world!!! I know what you are talking about with the death metal scene, so many bands trying to be either Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal or Nile. Too technical and too serious. Sure I can appreciate what Morbid Angel did for Death metal but now days do we really need another 50 small bands that totally copy them??? I'm glad you can see that we are original, a lot of fucking magazine morons put our CD in their player to review it and just write down Gorerotted sound like Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, Repulsion and Autopsy!!! What fucking bullshit!!!! None of those bands ever had a fucking
punk singer with a London sounding voice!!! Fuck I don't even own any Cannibal Corpse albums past The Bleeding, We sound nothing like Symphonies of Sickness Carcass and I don't even own any Autopsy or Repulsion albums at all!!!!!!!!!!!"
We can find much more guitar solos on "Only tools..." then on "Mutilated...". Is this a change of your composing philosophy or is it just a new guitarist invention? I can also say you have diverced a little more into death metal style - do you agree?
"We can play our shit much better than when we recorded 'Mutilated In Minutes'!! We have added some solos and harmonies and I think it makes our new album a lot fucking better to be honest. We have also changed the way we write stuff too, I sat down with our guitarist Robin Pants and talked about what we want to do on our future albums. The new shit we are writing is a lot fucking deeper!! We basically said what's the point in having two guitar players if we are both gonna play the same fucking thing!!! 'Only Tools And Corpses' is just the start of were Gorerotted is heading, I think people are gonna be fucking blown away by the next CD."
For sure you do not take seriously all your lyrics. But what would you say if police found out that any serial killer was inspiried with all these sick stories from your albums? Are sure it is definately not possible? OK - there's no need to argue there are hundreds of murders inspired with U2 in example and nobody cares. Metal music is always the one that is pointing as a brain-destroing thing!
"I would say good!!! Free fucking publicity for us and it would sell a bucket load of albums!!!!!! Idiots in the world always blame metal musicians for shit in society. Did you hear about the massacre in the Columbine high school in the USA??? Two kids went into a school and blew loads of school kids away. The fucking police and government blamed Marylyn Manson and metal music for the kids actions!!! What about the parents fault?? What about the USA's stupid guns laws??? About two months after the shooting they refused to let Marylyn Manson perform a show in their
town but they would let the Nation Rifle And Gun Association hold a meeting in the same venue!!! That is fucked up!!!!!! We had a guy go into a school in Scotland and shot 15 kids, he had never listened to metal music in his life, people need stop blaming music for violence."
There was a problem with the lirycs on the cover in Germany. Finally, another factory was found to print it out - the previous one refused to do this. I'm really surprised - I thought Germany is a very liberal country. Was there any exact liryc that was especially shocking for them? Have you had similar problem in any other country?
"No way!!! Germany is about the most repressed country in Europe when it comes to violent music!!!! They censor everything!!! Cannibal Corpse albums and Pungent Stench albums have all been banned in Germany. What the fuck is up with that!!! You can go into the red light district in places like Hamburg and buy porno mags with midgets shitting on donkeys but you can't sing imaginary songs about zombies?????? The only other place that we've had this problem is the USA. When Relapse re-issued 'Mutilated In Minutes' the main eight factory's in the country re-fused to print the booklet!!! I think its funny!!!!!! No naughty pictures of zombies but guns and sick porno for all!!!!!!!!!!"
Your cover arts are pretty impressive. Do you treat Jake (who's a comic drawer as well) as an official Gorerotted's graphic designer now?
"I think our covers are a little different, Jake does a lot of work for other bands but some how the Gorerotted ones look the best. Jake has even said this to me a few times that our covers are his best work!! I don't know if he will do the next one cause he has already done three covers for us!!! Maybe its time for a change!!!"
You were running a Kolobos distribution some time ago. Does it exist anymore? Any interesting releases on stock to recommend? How about other band members activity beside Gorerotted? Do they act in low budget porno-gore movies, collect postage stamps or smth like that? ;)
"Yeah I still do Kolobos Dist. Its my main job!!! We are getting really busy, anyone interested in what we do can check out www.kolobosdistribution.com. Junky Jon also has a label too, check out www.grindethic.co.uk"
And another thing I want to ask - who runs Dead Again records? And was "Mutilated..." the only one release done through this label? It's not clear for me as their official addres links to your page - is that your own label? And why not releasing your albums through your own label - just like Deeds Of Flesh or The Gathering or many other bands does today?
"I use to run Dead Again records with Gorerotted's manager. We also released a comp Cd and an album by UK band Regorge. We split the label up a few years ago because I wanted to concentrate or just playing guitar and working at Kolobos. Our manager now has her own label called IBD records (www.ibdrecords.com) and has kept the rights to 'Mutilated In Minutes' for Europe. She just released a good split by Amputated (Uk) and Leptotrichia (Belgium), next up she is releasing a black murder metal album by the UK's Screaming Daemon. I like releasing our shit on another label because it leaves me free to concentrate on just writing the music."
Why did you resign of doing blood on your gig? Are you bored with that or maybe you're just going to keep it for special occasions? And .. well.. you're a vegetarian I guess - was this thing o.k. with your veget. morality?
"Nope just bored with it!!! So many bands have started using it these days that its not special anymore!!! It was always fake blood anyway!!!"
How did it happen you were chosen for "The Incredibly People Show" movie soundtrack? What is this movie about? I also heared about your feature on another one titled "Mortician". Do directors of these movies listen to brutal music or do they just think it's a cool thing to put such band on a soundtrack?
"The guys from "Incredibly Strange People Show" listen to brutal music and wanted a nice violent track for the end of the movie!! Fuck knows about that "Mortician" film, maybe its not gonna happen now!!!!
Promotional copy does not contain intros between the tracks, but, as I know, there are a lot of them on the final version. How much time do you spend on watching movies and looking for good cuts?
"You must have a copy of the USA version!!! The European version and European promos have all the samples on the CD. We had to take of the samples for the USA release cause of legal and copyright issues!!! We are always on the
look out for cool bits of films to use on albums. Usually we find loads before we even start recording!! Its like we watch a film and go 'That bit would be cool for that song' then we just remember it for when we record!!!"
You are invited to "Rotterdam Death fest" - the show sponsored by Unique Leader Europe. Man, this is a big distinction in my opinion, as this label is one of my favorites and stands for the highest quality brutal music!
"Yeap this is gonna be a cool headline show for us!! The guys from Unique Leader Europe are pretty cool and I always love playing in Holland!!!! Check out the website cause we've got some other good festivals like Summer Breeze, Party San, Kattenfach and Braindead all this summer!!!!"
Do you remember your show in Warsaw in "Proxima" club 3 years ago? Your opinion about our country? Any chance to see you in Poland promoting "Only tools and corpses"?
"It was Proxima in Krakow not Warsaw!! Yeap it was a good show in a funny little cave like venue!! The PA blew up during the last song so we couldn't play any encores!!! We got pissed out of our heads on cheap strong Polish beer then somebody threatened us with a gun outside a supermarket!!! All good fun!!! Hopefully we can make it back to promote this album!!!"
Fluffy, personal question now - what's your way to keep your dread locks in perfect condition? Using fresh guts as a shampoo or something? ;)
"My dreadlocks are in the worse condition ever!!!! They look good in photos but really they are totally fucked in reality!!!!! I love em!!!!!"
OK - last question before goodbye - who's your secret and favorite pop singer? Be honest!
"My girlfriend plays Madonna when she is sick of metal!! At first I fucking hated it but now I'm starting to hear it more as rock music rather than pop music. She uses guitars and real drums so I can get into it!! Also her guitar play does a metal band with Dino from Fear Factory!!! Weird story but true so I've heard!!!"
