Verminous
Wywiad przeprowadził Tomasz Osuch
More and more death metal brigades on Swedish scene. Among them I found one new and young squad lately - Verminous, the band that released one of the most interesting swedish death metal debut albums I heard in few recent years! If you haven't know them yet, you should quickly check their debut album out! They play killer death metal - not sweet but brutal and uncompromising of course! With Verminous guitarist, I discussed a couple of important things concerning the band and more.
First of all I would like to congratulate you on your debut album - "Impious Sacrilege"! In my opinion you guys did a great album!!!
"Thanks!! We are all proud over the result, hard work usually pay off."
I agree. Some people can say that the cover art of "Impious Sacrilege" is a little bit controversial and can hurt their feelings. What was the idea with this pic?
"The idea of the cover art comes from discussions with Timo Ketola (the artist who made the cover) after he had heard the recording he felt that he had to make something absolutely blasphemous. And his remake of Madonna with her bastard child is in my point of view, way more beautiful then the original painting. Any feelings hurt----------Just wait with the tears till you see our next album!!! Haha..."
One of the songs starts with these words - 'there is no place for the cross'. Isn't there a place for such symbols in your life?
"No... In our world there isn't place for such symbols or the people who worship such symbols. When the time comes for this world to be cleansed, these are the people who will perish. The scum of this earth will be wiped away."
On the album you played very aggressive, fucking fast and brutal piece of death metal. I can hear some influences of old Swedish bands, but from the other side - Verminous doesn't play typical Swedish death metal. You have lots of fresh and new ideas in your songs. How did you make it to become such a perfect result?
"We are very influenced by bands like: Autopsy, Nihilist, Morbid Angel, Grotesque, Possessed and many more. But influences should never become rip-offs, we have so many bands today that obviously don't understand that. We just do our thing, we have found a sound that fits us and we intend to keep this sound and continue to release monstrous death metal."
Did you played in any other bands before you formed Verminous? Where did you get experience which we can hear in your music?
"I (lead guitar), Agge (drums) and Simon (bass) have all spent 3 years in music school. Linkan (guitar & vokills) has learned by himself. I played in Bestiality and Bastard before, I also play in Sgt. Carnage so does Simon as well. Agge and Linkan played together in Delve."
What do you think about eventual comparisons of Verminous to Grotesque? It is also said about comparisons to At The Gates...
"We feel honored to be compared with Grotesque, that's one of the greatest bands from Sweden.
But that we would sound like At The Gates is grotesque."
Shortly before the release of "Impious Sacrilege" a 7" "Smell The Birth Of Death" with four tracks was released? Two of them are included on the debut album. Are these the same versions which were on the 7" "Smell The Birth Of Death"?
"The 7" is actually not yet released (!) so the first proof of existence is our cd "Impious Sacrilege". Both "Verminous Fluids" and "Salvation By Extermination" is recorded in their original ways. We
recorded an old Delve song on the cd: "Of Evil Blood", we changed a few things in it from the Delve days and made it into a Verminous song."
Dave Rotten has a few great bands in his label. Are you satisfied with cooperation with Xtreem Music? How do Verminous feels in company of other bands from that label, e.g: Disgorge, Hour Of Penance, Abaddon Incarnate?
"We are very satisfied with the work Dave has done for us, we have signed a 2 album contract with Xtreem Music. Dave is a great man, he truly lives for death metal. All three bands you mention are great, hopefully we can do some gigs with these bands in a near future."
Sweden's position in death metal worldwide was made few years ago by great acts like Entombed, Dismember, At The Gates and others. Subsequently the melodic Swedish death metal was born and it seems there are still lots of bands playing sweet death nowadays. Why are these melodic death metal bands still so popular? It came from Sweden and today in your country there are also new bands playing that...
"If you mean bands like In Flames I am sorry, but I can't give you an explanation to why these boring melodic mid tempo bullshit bands are so popular."
Do you think that some day "Impious Sacrilege" will be appreciated as a one of the best debut albums from Sweden in recent years?
"That's up to the listeners to say. I can't answer that."
What can we expect from Verminous next materials? I hope you will still play death metal in the vein of debut and there will be no plans to change the music style?
"I promise you that we won't let you down, the next album will be aggressive, extreme, blasphemous and 100% death metal."
So, did you start writing new songs for the next album? Can you say when the second Verminous album will see the light of day?
"We have written 4 new songs for the next album and we are planing to enter the studio in June. Hopefully the album will be released around the celebration of the birth of christ, it will be a perfect Christmas gift, haha. (Christmassacre)."
I would like to ask you about something else. Pelle, what is your opinion about current situation in metal world?
"I think that death metal is fighting its way back. There are many very good death metal bands out there. The underground is growing and hopefully this genre can grow to be as royal and magnificent as it ones were."
Thanks for the answers man. Close this intie as you wish.
"Thanks allot for this interview and for supporting us!!! Keep it malevolent!!!!!!!!!!!!"
