  • Krisiun

Wywiad przeprowadził Tomasz OsuchThis band is the epitome of quintessential death metal music. Three bros - banded together under the one name - have their own unique way to play brutally, aggressively and technically, and they play even more so on every successive release. They know exactly how to do it, and each of Krisiun's albums is always more interesting and better than the one previously. Everybody who knows Krisiun's albums or seen the band live, knows what we mean. The beast is ready to kill: "Works Of Carnage", Krisiun's new attack will be out in September... but now, you can read an intie with Max, the drummer, who told us lots of details concerning the new album, the band's plans and much more...Hail Max! We have not heard from Krisiun for the past few months! What have you been doing after the European tour and before you entered the studio? Did you spend this time on the songwriting process?

"Hail! After the european tour we came back to Brasil and started the songwriting process of the new album. We spent a few months composing and practising the songs every day until we felt ready to start the recording process in mid. February when we hit the studio."

You were on a European tour with Vader, Decapitated and Prejudice. You played one gig in Poland. How was this tour and the gigs which you had played in Brazil lately?

"The tour with Vader, Decapitated and Prejudice was fuckin killer, we had a great time with those guys and much fun, lots of vodka, beer and weed in the tour bus. Since we have finished the recording process of the album we have done a few shows around Brasil. Last week we play in the capital of Brasil called Brasilia in a big festival for more than 50.000 people! It was fuckin amazing! There was all kinds of bands playing in this festival. Krisiun headlined the metal day and we had a great response."

You were twice in Poland - first on Thrash'em All Festival 2001 with Behemoth, Hate, Lux Occulta and some other polish bands and the second time you played in Kraków. Did you have enough time for visiting interesting places and making friends here?

"The coolest place we had been at was that dragon castle in Kraków (it means Wawel castle and the dragon over the Vistula river - T.O), that place is fuckin amazing. And surely we made lots of friends in Poland, the guys of Vader and Decapitated are really cool people. When Vader played in Brasil they came to our house one night and got really drunk ang high."

The new album is ready and is waiting to be released. When will maniacs be able to buy "Works Of Carnage"?

"In September the beast will be unleashed. This album has a heaviest production we ever had, and is the most brutal album we have ever done."

The new album was recorded in Bebop Studio with Pierre Remillard - the producer who worked with Cryptopsy and Gorguts to mention a few. Are you satisfied with the results of the recording session? Is Bebop a better place than Creative Sound Studio? How did it happen that you recorded with Pierre?

"We are 100% satisfied with the final result, this album is much heavier than "Ageless Venomous". Pierre gave us the right sound, every instrument is there heavy and powerfull as fuck. He gave 100% of himself for this album and the atmosphere on the studio was really great. We met during an american tour we did with Cryptopsy, Dimmu Borgir and Diabolic in 2003. We got along pretty well and he got really interested in produce our new album. When the tour was over we came back home and he sent us some of the cds he had produced and then we decided he was the right guy."

You entitled the new album "Works Of Carnage". What does this title mean? Does it reflect how hard and intensively Krisiun work?

"Works Of Carnage" is the killing instinct, the wrath of the beast, that kill and kill again!!!"

On your previous album "Ageless Venomous" there were two instrumental songs - "Serpents Spectres" and "Diableros". One of these sounds like a classical Brazilian song; is it based on folklore? Will there be any instrumental songs on "Works Of Carnage"?

"On "Works Of Carnage" there will be two instrumentals as well but totally different from the ones we did on "Ageless Venomous". "Diableros" as you said is kind of a classical ancient song with percussion and very fast acoustic guitar. On "Works Of Carnage" one instrumental is the sound of war, and the other is very deep, dense and dark as hell itself."

I'd like to ask you about something. Didn't you think about using a classical drums - instruments which come from Brazilian culture? Something just like a experiment on your album. Haven't you ever thought about using some influences from your country's music? For example, Sepultura did it on "Roots" with the help of Indian tribe and eventually it was a great success.

"We respect what Sepultura did but we are not gonna try the same because our music is really different from Sepultura. Our drums is the sound of apocalyptic war."

When you released "Ageless Venomous" some thought that you used a drum-machine and they thought that you didn't play on this album. Those who thought that made a fucking mistake of course!!! Why do the drums sound in this way on that album?

"No doubt that people who said such blasphemy have to shut up their fucking mouths up now. People thought that the drums were electronic just because the kicks are really up front with this dry and cliky sound. We always try to do something different concerning production, to not sound tiring."

What is the main difference between the last two albums and what can we expect from the new Krisiun attack? What would be the best recommendation of the new album?

"First difference is the production, everything sounds heavier, the songs are shorter and more straight forward."

You have made quite a huge progress between your previous release and the newest album? A few months ago you said that "Works Of Carnage" would be the most brutal and the fastest Krisiun album so far... Where did these changes come from?

"This is natural. When we started composing the songs we felt it should be more straight forward, faster, more brutal."

Krisiun is a phenomenon on the death metal scene because of the relations between band's members. Three brothers in one camp! Sometimes it's hard to imagine how it was possible for you all to get on with each other for so many years without killing one another. How do you do that?

"We really respect each other, we don't really fight, sometimes we exchange bad words but that's it. You have to be a mature man to stay on the road and stick around with the same people for decades, is not worthy to let the pride and stupid fights spoil the whole thing."

<In the past you played together with second axeman. Didn't you think about recruiting another guitar player? Nowadays it's rare for a death metal combo to use only one guitar.

"We definitely gonna stay exactly like that - as a power trio. Our bass guitar on the new album and for the next shows will be much louder."

You have very strong position on the death metal scene worldwide and for a death metal band from Brazil it's a success. Now Krisiun is the most popular brasilian brutal band. Can you tell me what other bands from Brazil are up to? What are Ophiolatry, Mental Horror, Abhorrence doing now? Are there any new bands we have no idea about? Is it true that Rebaelliun split up?!

"Those band have been playing around the country and I believe Abhorrence is about to put out a new album. A few months ago Ophiolatry and Ancestral Malediction, another killer band, opened the show for us. There are lots of good bands in Brasil like Subtera, Torture Squad, Funeratus, Decomposed God, Infested Blood, Obskure and many others. Yeah, it seems like Rebaelliun really split up."

Ok Max. That's all from me! Thanx, I hope to see Krisiun soon in Poland again! Last words in this intie are of course for you. I would also like to ask you about all other Krisiun plans for this year.

"Thank you man. Soon we gonna back to Poland to spread the "Works Of Carnage", the satanic revenge! Our plans are to release the album and go for endless touring."
