NO SATAN NO BLACK
Finnish metal scene is widely-known, that's out of question. Apart from highly-acclaimed names everybody knows, the northern land sews some worth checking out bands at times. One of them is surely NIGHTSIDE - a black metal horde that may have a lot to say in near future. Devilish lyrics, anit-christian attitude and ultimately fast riffing with a gentle touch of occasional melody. Here they come, be ready to die! Fuck yeah!!!Firstly a very recent question. I heard some line-up replacements occurred to NIGHTSIDE lately. What were the reasons for them?
Diabolus Sylvarum: "NIGHTSIDE's musical development took a turn for more technical
approach and Serpent, our ex-vocalist has never been a fan of so called "difficult music",
so he decided to left. There was never any bad blood between us when he left, we still drink beer together etc."
"Ad Noctum" - the previous EP - was released to unknown to me Northern Heritage. What's the label?
"Northern Heritage is a very anti-commercial Finnish underground-label. That's about it."
How did you get in touch with Sound Riot - a label that is not a stone's throw from where you live?
"Hmm. Very good question. I think that NIGHTSIDE's demotape somehow ended up there and soon after that they contacted us. I know that we didn't send them anything so it was a bit odd when they contacted us."
Your music is described as more or less melodious black metal. I dwelled on the topic and came to terms it's not correct in 100%. What do you think?
"The End of Christianity" is very aggressive as well. You are right, melodic black metal is a wrong term when describing NIGHTSIDE's music. There are many elements and various levels so just describing it as "Melodic black metal" doesn't do justice. But, if someone wants to call our music that, I won't be sending any death-threats just for that. It takes a little more."
The title of your album in an obvious way appoints your attitude. Why do you have
constant beef with christians? They are so harmless.
"I wouldn't say that we have constant beef with christians but the fact remaining is that Christianity is a plague, mental suicide and utmost blindness all wrapped in one. I feel almost pity when thinking those weak followers, slaves to the mutant of evolution, called Jesus Christ. If you truly think that they are harmless, you have a truly twisted sense of reality."
Do you share the opinion that true black metal ought to stay satanic, merely?
"Yes, absolutely. If it isn't satanic, it isn't black metal."
I got an information that you're gonna do a gig in December. Have you got many occasions to play onstage in Finland?
"Not recently anyway; we had those line-up changes which slowed everything down. There were all sorts of wankers auditioning for NIGHTSIDE which took our valuable time. We are now using session-players, that was the best choice for us."
"The End..." consists of two material actually. Didn't you have enough music and were forced to put the demo out as well?
"I suggested to Sound Riot that the demo could be a bonus for some limited edition-version of "The end..."CD, but that would've been too expensive to arrange. We weren't forced to do anything, the demo is on the album from our own free will."
The music on your debut, as it appears, is not that fresh (originally recorded in '99). Any news as far as new songs go? What to expect?
"New songs are very far from the older ones. It's still very raw and aggressive but there is more technical approach as I mentioned in the first question. We are planning to start the second CD recordings in January, so we'll see what happens."
Finnish music is frequently considered as very melodious. Why is that, by your own judgment?
"I don't see so much difference in melodic music between other countries, there is of course melodic music in Finland but also other styles. I never even thought of it like that. I'm pretty drunk so sorry if I don't make any sense with my answers."
Do you have any fellow-bands in Finland you like partying or playing gigs most of all. Lately I did an interview with Count De Nocte. Do you know them?
"Finland's black metal-scene isn't so big so if you play gigs in Finland you naturally get to know people. Yes, NIGHTSIDE has played with Count De Nocte, so answering your latter question, yes, we do know them."
What's the most popular Finnish band in your country? And which one is most respectable?
"If you are asking the most popular metal band then I think it would be Stratovarius. The respect-question I answer from my point of view; I'd say most respectful band is Mana Mana (R.I.P.)
Do you like HIM? I know you do!
"I'll have to say that I have no respect for a band that got famous with a cover-song and not by their own material. That's just the easy way out. Ok, feel free to spread some hate for the end! Thank you for the interview!"
Hail the dark within!
