KNOW-HOW TO KILL
I hope nobody finds fault with this, if I say that I know death metal scene inside out. I've been exploring this genre appointed by death for year and have always been thinking the good times have passed away and merely the gods and true fans have remained. In will and woe only stubborn are capable of creativity and sincerity. Now it's been like two or three years since HYPONS was spawned in order to crash with utter severity and brilliant technique. Their new album - "The Revenge Ride" is undoubtedly the best piece of doomed music money can buy! No guests, no effects, no wimpy shit. They have the know-how to kill!!! Must get it now!
Man, what have you done to my ears! Do you really want to make me cripple?
Bruno: "Not yet..."
Being more seriously, do you realize that "The Revenge Ride" is the very best album your scene has begotten for years?
"You know, I glad that you like that album but anyway it is a matter of personal taste. Someone doesn't have to agree with this..."
Bruno, be that kind, and tell our readers about the production process of the sophomore full-length of yours? I guess, it wasn't that easy to obtain such killer sound.
"I wanted to record abroad to get more professional production this time. Generally, I was pretty satisfied with results we got in EXPONENT studio previously but I wanted to step higher, to develop and try something new again. Harris Johns is really very experienced and famous producer and even his name is a proof of good sound
quality. For me was a honour even to meet him and although we did not record too much in the vein he is used for and what is typical for him, at the end we have been all very satisfied, including our record label."
As well as I remember, after the release of the previous album you had an extensive tour schedule. What was the most memorable experience at that time?
"Drinking of BEHEMOTH guys... .Just now we are into Czech-Slovakian tour with them again (8 shows) so I am again into that massive partying that's not really my cup of tea. On the other had I have to say that I like these guys a lot, they're cool and excellent and professional band. My favorite one... Except for that the biggest experience was to be on tour with MORBID ANGEL, it need no more comment."
What about the future plans for touring? I have already told Przemek of Mad Lion that if he did not organize even a sole gig of Hypnos in Poland, I'd probably kill him!
"We already played in Poland, 2 shows at spring 2001 with DEVILYN and we will be glad to be there again. Your scene kicks ass, one of the strongest worldwide, definitely."
The cover artwork of "The Revenge Ride" is, as I presume, another picture taken from the book you found years ago. Will you continue this in the future. I think it's slowly becoming a trademark of yours. Don't you think?
"Exactly, that's what we want. I have a book full of pictures like that so you can expect all front covers in this vein."
Back to the main topic. As I have already said, the new shit you did simply crashes! You know what you did, so this is rather obvious anyway. But I must be myself and ask you wouldn't it have been better to keep the speed and awesome devastating ambience of tracks ("Evil Awaken" "Endorsed by Satan" or "Spider-Werk") throughout all the length of the album? To be frank, I love these pieces most of all.
"I personally like various stuff, different tempos, atmosphere, voices... I keeps record out of to be boring and to be honest, death metal nowadays simply bores in 90% of releases. I love many different tastes of death metal so you can take it as our style of work."
Another worth underlining issue of the great work marked by Satan himself is, certainly, your god-damn-spit-my-balls-out vocals!!! Maaaaan, you rule! After the whole rumor, I consider that your departure from Krabathor was nothing but blessing.
"You know, it still pretty sad story to me. Being 13 great years with best friends and then 1 or 2 years fucked up..... I would never imagine to leave Krabator, it was my band of dreams and I was able to die for Krabathor. But since we were not friends anymore and cool atmosphere disappeared into competition fights and antipathy, I did not need to stay there anymore and I started with HYPNOS. In this situation it was the best possible solution and I am really happy with it!"
Any line-up changes since "In Blood We Trust"?
"Hundreds... Just now we are without guitarist again, DAVID M. leaves us right after this tour with BEHEMOTH, I am in touch with possible replacement. I will inform about that on our web site: www.hypnos.cz"
Is your music appropriately available in the US? Is Morbid responsible for this as well? This music is for Americans, in a way, if you know what I mean.
"Except a few licenses (as for example MAD LION in Poland) MORBID takes care of worldwide distribution through local distributors and US is a bit problem, we just sold a few hundreds of debut album there only. Americans care more about brutal death in the vein of DYING FETUS or NILE so they don't pay a big attention to bands like we are. We would need a license deal there and it's really hard. But MORBID REC. is doing a good job for us, we get a lot of support from them."
No guests this time. I suppose it was done consciously. Right?
"I did not want to spend more label money as was necessary. We took expansive production and I wanted to keep expenses as low as possible."
I know it's to early, but even now I'm eager to check out your 3rd album. I'm sure it'll be something special. You know, I'm just thinking to myself, every release of Hypons was different in a way, yet keeping the most proper dose of death. I guess, next time will be resemble. When to expect act three?
"I have no idea, first we have to complete line-up again and then we start to think of new album."
