Polish combo Outre is one of those rare bands that actually does something of merit with its genre of choice. Much like French weirdos Way to End they too use the genre to craft something altogether more interesting. Instead of conforming to the known conventions "Ghost Chants" mixes elements of death -, and doom metal into its sound. It also helps that the crunchy production is both crystal clear and bass-heavy. The vocals aren't your typical frog croaks and rasps either. Black metal is a mere starting point rather than the destination for these Polish gentlemen, and it shows through out the album. In spirit this is closer related to post-"Pandemonic Incantations" Behemoth than, say, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" Mayhem. "Ghost Chants" avoids both the caricatural tendencies of the primitive sub branch, and the overblown prententiousness of theological black metal. Some of the more technical and groovy passages are akin to "From Mars to Sirius" Gojira, the doomier cuts sometimes end up sounding more like Neurosis – most of the time Outre is just a pristinely produced death/black metal hybrid.
