Impalers are yet another non-American band that really wish they were. "God From the Machine" is the Danes second album, and their first for Norwegian label Crime Records. The album sounds exactly like every other band "inspired" by the American greats of the thrash genre. There's nothing really wrong with Impalers as such, but do we really need more of this? At least there are plenty of soaring solos, and pumping rhythm sections but then there's the absolute lack of interesting riffing and chord progressions. There's gang shouts too cos absolutely no retro-thrash album is ever apparently complete without it. The rasped vocals are nice, surely, but Dead Head did this better in the late 1980's, and they played even faster and far more technical than these Danes. In the softer parts Impalers recall Cliff Burton era Metalica, and they even do a power ballad with 'Beyond Trinity'. At this point even the tired Pär Oloffson artwork is cliché, and kinda annoying. Apparently there's still an audience for this cos labels the world over keep churning this warmed over drivel out in a systematic manner. As far as retro-thrash metal is concerned you could do far worse with Impalers one could argue – but who's going to settle for a weak imitation when you could just play the genre's classic albums? Right. At least Nervosa had the dignity to be an all-female outfit, and Prika Amaral just does this genre way better than these competent, if completely unnecessary, Danish men.
