The duo previously released a two-track demo/EP called "Wheels Within Wheels" and now return with its full length debut. Stylistically "Suspended From the Cosmic Altaar" is a mix of Finnish proto-technical death metal legends Demilich meets (its solitary album "Nespithe" is a classic for a reason) and the early work from Swedish powerhouse Spawn Of Possession (specifically "Cabinet"). It isn't quite as over-the-top as the Spaniards of Wormed, but there are a few stylistic overlaps from time to time. The production puts great emphasis on the thick, prominent bass lines, and there are plenty guitar solos. Adding further to the classic genre feel is grunt that is akin to Craig Pillard's work with Incantation. The album presentation is helped tremendously by the amazing artwork by Raúl González, who worked with Deceased earlier. It happens seldomly that a young band starts off with this much potential and promise, but Apocrophex understand where the genre archetypes and infuse just enough contemporary improvements that take its traditional backbone to new and exciting heights. "Suspended From the Cosmic Altaar" merges the best of both worlds while keeping the doors wide open from productional and compositional finetuning in future output. The best death metal record this year? Perhaps.
