Hailing from Saint Petersburg, Russia black metal combo Blackdeath has been around in one form or the other since 1995. Two decades and eight albums deep into its career "Gift" proves how powerful a genre black metal can be in capable hands. The band, the lifeswork of brothers Dmitriy and Denis Popov along with drummer Maya, continues the tradition of David Parland-era Dark Funeral, Sabathan-era Enthroned and Marduk circa "Heaven Shall Burn…". One of Blackdeath's most curious characteristics is that they are a Russian band singing in German. The addition of drummer Maya in 2007 prompted a change in direction towards more adventurous and psychedelic realms. It goes without saying that this change was leagues better than their early Darkthrone worship. The most interesting songs are the ones that stray away from the typical Norsecore genre template. Maya is an exceptional drummer that is on the verge of being discovered by a bigger audience, accolades that she certainly deserves given her stellar performance. "Gift" comes with a crystal clear, bass-heavy and organic sounding production. The record isn't overproduced by any stretch of the imagination, but it exudes a sense of warmth often missing on stereotypical black metal outfits. East-Europe continues to be a haven for some very interesting black metal units as recent records by Outre and this band prove. Hopefully they'll continue to progress into this direction. Well done.
