For fucken reals, dudes. Germany might be home to Necrophagist, the most overrated “death” metal band this side of, I dunno, (insert overrated band) – it at least has its share of absolutely stellar bands that two people know about. Anasarca, Chapel Of Disease, Golem, Pavor. Add this fucken bunch of long-haired krauts to that list. Holy fucken crap. Abyssous has the sickest vocals I’ve heard in a long fucken time. This guy pukes his guts out the way John Tardy did on “Slowly We Rot” or like Theo Loomans did on “Embrace the Death”. There are three atmospheric interludes that are kinda creepy, but don’t add a whole lot otherwise. If you want this sort of crap, go listen Equimanthorn. No, really. Equimanthorn is the kind of good atmospheric crap. Odin knows good pure death metal is hard to come by, and bands that sound crunchy and dirty are even fucken rarer. I don’t care what you faggots think, this shit rocks. This is one part old Asphyx, one part Sadistic Intent and about as fucken gritty as Cenotaph circa “The Gloomy Reflections Of Our Hidden Sorrows”. There are a fuckload of sweet solos too. Oh yeah, you read that right. This band named itself after a track of Morbid Angel’s last decent record, “Heretic”. It sounds exactly as you think it does, and that’s reassuring. There aren’t many certainties in the metal scene: Bolt Thrower will rock no matter what, Alexi Laiho is a douche and Sumerian Records will always suck harder than the average chick on Exploited College Girls. I know dude, I used that punchline once before, but I’m having a fucken headache that not even Snaggletooth can cure right now. So “...Smouldering” is about everything you think it is, and everything that it isn’t. I wish I could say something fucken productive about this EP, but this is just solid, hateful and dark sounding death metal like it was pretty much played exclusively in the ‘90s. This shit just rocks. Plain and simple.
