Infest’s latest and fourth album makes up for the disappointing Vader album released this year. While that was a watered down effort, meekly mixing Death Metal and Thrash Metal in an attempt to perhaps recapture the glory of "De Profundis", it falls rather short and you don’t even feel like laughing at it. Serbia’s Infest is doing something similar and it succeeds where Vader fails. Remarkably at that.
"Cold Blood War" is a dead ringer for Vader circa "The Ultimate Incantation" and "De Profundis". That golden era. It’s also doing some of its own Thrash Metal thing but it’s got Vader written all over it, perhaps with less Slayer and more Floridian thrash. It’s also comparable to early Massacre material and has hints of Sepultura. But while this sounds like an old school veneration ceremony, it’s got contemporary aggression and fervour. The urgency is close to the Grindcore maniacs out there – the music is relentless and oh so fast and cathartic. The leads leave something to be desired but when the music is so potent and rambunctious, you don’t really care. It’s just one shred-fest after the other. Mind-blowing.
Certainly there’s not a lot of originality here. No fancy technical stuff either. But who wants that when you can have effective as hell super-fast shredding that can induce goose bumps? This makes me not miss or pine for Vader any more. It’s definitely better than Vader’s "Tibi Et Igni". I wish there was some coding that took everyone to a page where they could listen to Infest’s music instead. It’s that good. Xtreem Music has released the Death/Thrash Metal album of the year. Look no further than this if you’re hoping to satisfy that primitive urge of rabid Death/Thrash Metal, the kind that isn’t created anymore, not even by the original bands themselves.
