Unlike the sad sacks of shit that are current day Kataklysm, it is possible to be a fucken kick ass melodic death metal band. For fucken reals. I’ve never heard of Your Last Wish, and while they rip off the archetypical genre bands like At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity, at least they have the decency to not completely fucken blow. Yeah, I’m as surprised as you are, asshat. On top of that they are fronted by the Peruvian-born Roxana Bouchard. Not only is she easy on the eyes, she has a mean rasping grunt that combines the best of Opera IX’s Cadaveria, Astarte’s Maria Kolokouri and Rachel Heyzer. Your Last Wish are one of the few modern death metal bands that seem to fucken understand that aping At the Gates can go hand in hand with being fucken brutal. There are plenty of excellent solos and Iron Maiden riffs for everybody to go around, but at least this Canadian bunch remembers that melodic death metal can be dark and ominous sounding. Odin knows that almost every fucken stupid death metal forgets that these days. I had about given up on Canadian metal, you know. Fuck knows that bands like this don’t come around often enough. By Ruby Jones’ tits, you can even hear the bass guitar popping away, and the drums don’t sound like a fucken typewriter. I swear to fucken Odin, this Roxana gal has more attitude in her little finger than that shit ugly hag Angela Gossow ever had in her entire fucken career. Just saying. They even have a song called ‘Creep’, which unfortunately isn’t a Radiohead cover. Yeah, two tracks are completely fucken pointless, being ‘Intro’ and the interlude ‘Experiments’. I have no fucken clue whether this is supposed to be a concept record, or if there’s a central thematic. All I can say is that, for once, isn’t completely fucken fruity melodic death metal. Which is more a fucken exception than the rule these days. For fucken reals, dudes. Death metal used to be hateful and scary once. These days every stupid band sounds exactly the same, and nobody has a clue why they sounding the way they do. Your Last Wish, who despite their name aren’t an effeminate metalcore band, realize this – and they are ready to crush skulls. Even though these guys look like university graduates rather than honest-to-Odin metallers they play some fine death metal, and miss Bouchard is just an added bonus. Sometimes it’s really all that simple. Play decent death metal, throw a chick at me.
