So here’s another band from the land of Gojira and Massacra. Curiously they are also signed to Kaotoxin Records, home to Savage Annihilation. Generally, I don’t mind labels too much, but this begs the question: why was Nephren-Ka signed exactly? Outside of their Frank Herbert “Dune” concept, there’s little to set them apart in terms of music in comparison to Savage Annihilation. Odin knows most death metal is really fucken stupid, and painfully boring to boot. Nephren-Ka is another rugged, solid and semi-technical but entirely unremarkable death metal act that really sounds like everybody else, and Savage Annihilation in particular. Hey, I don’t mind, but at least fucken do something with the “Dune” theme. Instead of doing what Nile did, and including atmospheric interludes, sound effects or whatever studio magic to convey the lyrical themes, Nephren-Ka does nothing of that. No, scratch that. They do it, but not far often enough to make a difference, or to set them apart from the current crop of sci-fi obsessed bands. Why fucken bother with the lyrics then, guys? Geez. And what’s up with that band name, anyway fuckos? Nephren-Ka? That is not even related to Herbert or “Dune”, that’s a Lovecraft reference – and one that Nile used far more intelligently long before you dimwits. What was stopping you from calling your band Muad’Dib, Kwisatz Haderach or something far more fitting to the “Dune” thematic? Usually I don’t pay attention to a death metal band’s lyrics, cos most of them are not only stupid, and incoherent but fucken silly on top of that. Now, I was looking forward to “The Fall Of Omnius” because at least the “Dune” universe is more interesting than the standard death metal subject matter. Now, all of this would mean something if you could understand what was being sung. Alas, this is not the case. Nephren-Ka is another grunting, gurgling, grooving, double blasting and occasionally weedly solo’ing death metal act that has zero identity of its own, despite its interesting gimmick. So, yeah, I love the “Dune” concept, it is really fucken sad that the band decided to do nothing of note with it. What a fucken waste. I suppose the album isn’t bad, but it isn’t especially good either. No. It really sounds like Savage Annihilation, and that’s that. I’m fucken done with this stupid band with a great idea. Next time figure it out, cos this could have been fantastic if the band actually, you know, did something with the concept they are pushing. What a waste.
