What the fuck is the shit?! What is it with Italians and fucken fruity power – and progressive metal? Fuck knows they have a lot of it, and the less I need to hear of it, the better. That is not to say that Overtures is especially heinous. No. They are one of the more tolerable examples of the genre, but it is worth pointing out. Now, I’ve been to Italy. I’ve been to Rome. Other than it’s really fucken hot a lot of the time, it is also a country filled to the brim with the most beautiful women, and an exquisite cuisine. But, uhm, yeah – this is a music review site, so I’m supposed to talk about that. Influences? Hmm, Timo Tolki era Stratovarius, some Nevermore/early Communic and a good dose of Luca Turelli era Rhapsody in terms of bombast. Last time I heard progressive metal from Italy was in 2009 with a then reformed band called Loadstar. I’m still having nightmares about that, so it’s good to hear that Overtures is better in this genre, no matter how cheesy or fucken fruity they are in general. This is actually pretty enjoyable stuff, if you are in the mood for positive, life-affirming metal with big choruses, soaring vocals, solos aplenty and fruity keyboards. I like it in small doses. Thank Odin this band has nothing of those absolutely bonkers sounding medieval interludes the way Rhapsody does. So what the fuck is this shit, you wonder? Power metal without actual power? Progressive metal without, you know, metal? Sure fucken sounds like it. Not that that is bad, a lot of the time this just sounds like Queen’s heavier rock numbers. Thing is, that’s not what I come to metal for. I don’t know about you, but there you have it. So, yeah, “Entering the Maze” is tolerable – and I suppose it is acceptable if you are a fan of this genre. It is better than most underground stuff in this genre, but how much does that say exactly? Not a whole fucken lot, I know. Shut up. You asked for this, not me. Fuck off.
