Remember when something from Brazil was exotic and exciting? Like when Roberta Murgo was the hottest thing on the internet in the mid 2000s. Holy crap, I can’t even remember when I was last excited with the prospect of having to review a Brazilian metal band. Painside isn’t going to change that, cos they don’t even sound South American. What is it with these fucken bro vocals? It was stupid when 3 Inches Of Blood did it, so it bears repeating that it is still stupid now. Never mind that they are from Brazil, cos this sounds as Swedish or German as they come. I have a hard time telling this apart from Dream Evil, Sacred Steel, Firewind or Arch Enemy. Yes, I still hate Arch Enemy, thank you – but in terms of production this can easily match that gender-confused band of sorry old sacks of shit. No, Angela’s Titties hasn’t released a good record in a long, long time. This is fist-pumping heavy metal that is really poppy and cuddly. It sounds good, and it’s easily digestible. By Odin, Painside is actually pretty good when the singer is allowed to flex his pipes, and those god-awful tough guy/bro vocals not appear at all. "Build Your Fiction" continues to built my frustration as Painside really is capable of something better, something more ambitious than this stupid try-hard pop metal crap. Obviously the band can play even though the format they’ve chosen is limiting, the leads/solos are pretty sweet – only the drums are unassuming and a bit lazy. So what you get is three tracks of impeccably clean and incredibly flaccid heavy metal that ticks every imaginable box of the genre. It isn’t stupid for once, that helps, but it isn’t the stuff of legend either (haha). No, it’s just solid, competent and well, faceless. There isn’t any hurt in that, but don’t expect me to fucken pat you on the back. No. I’d rather have ‘A Caustic Romance’ with Roberta Murgo than anything else. Maybe I should open my can of beer, and relax with the thought of Murgo in one of her tiny bikinis. Yeah, I’ll do that. Thank you.
