The Pet Shop Boys already asked this pointy question in 1987, and I’m going to ask it again in the hopes of getting a simple answer: what have I done to deserve this? Holy crap, "Gods..." is the best death metal record I heard this year, and it wasn’t even released in 2013! Oh, no. This was originally released as an independent demo tape (no, kids, stereos don’t have tape decks anymore) in 1991 and it is the sole release for this Finnish band. Odin knows I love me some Finnish death metal. Demilich’s "Nespithe" owns you all, and no matter how many of you tell me Necrophagist is "like, totally technical and whack, brah. Like, for reals!" – I will throw up this band and continue to say that this is how death metal is supposed to be done. There’s a hefty Incantation vibe to this demo, and "Mortal Massacre" era Mortician is written all over this. That isn’t strange since both came out the same year. I’m not sure whether the entirely too long intro is taken from a horror – or a porn movie, but I suppose that is the point. In fact, outside of the half-growled, hissed and grunted vocals you’d be hardpressed to find any real differences with "Mortal Massacre" era Mortician. Other than that, you know, the drumming and riffing are a bit more developed and interesting. Yeah, some of the riffing even reminds me of "Ritual Of Infinity" era Morpheus Descends. There are four tracks here, plus a fairly pointless intro/outro. It’s exactly why I got into this genre way back when. It was cavernous, monstrous sounding and a bit scary. Demos were succinct and to-the-point, no wasting of precious resources. This is death metal, friends. Nothing more, nothing less. No need for a dozen prefixes or descriptive adjectives. No, pure death metal at its most basic and effective form. Why is it so hard to do it right these days? If labels need to unearth demos from two decades ago, you know something is terribly wrong with the underground. Not that that surprises me. I have been saying that for years now. But who pays attention to what I write, right? So, yeah, these "Gods..." are particularly benevolent and I thank them for that. I will now put on my Incantation shirt and headbang some more...
