Odin knows good black metal is hard to come by. Yet there are bands that continue to surprise even the most grumpiest and cynical bastards (me) among us. Finland continues to be an unquenchable source for the most primitive and vile black metal. I really need to go there, and see why that is. I don’t get why all these Finnish bands are so pissed off all the time. Is it the constant frigid cold? The many frozen lakes? The many alluring pale and milkskinned women? Impious Havoc really likes Bathory, Beherit and Venom, or wants to be them. I dunno. So, anyway, the band is active since 2002, and this is the sixth full-length album. If anything you can’t accuse them of not being productive. Like a lot of Finnish bands this is actually fairly bass-heavy, and it is as uncompromising as it is crude sounding. In fact, I’m surprised this band isn’t on Hammer Of Hate yet, who seem to have something of an affinity for this sort of stuff. Just saying. There’s a raw punk energy to the riffing and the drumming is as basic as they come. It’s not terribly original (haha) or vital (haha) to the scene, so you don’t need to run out and pick up a copy of this record. You have heard this before, I have heard this before. Sometimes you just want to put on something loud and evil. I get that. Personally, I’d rather cuddle up to Stacey Massey, Lindsay Ellis or Noora Federley, but that might be me. So, anyway, on topic. “Infidels” sounds exactly like you think it does, and sometimes that is exactly what you want to hear. Holy cow, if a notorious detractor of black metal like me can appreciate this goofy shit in all its crude and somewhat retarded glory – how about you then? Long story short. This is terribly unoriginal and derivative, but somehow it works. Holy cow. Who knew? It doesn’t reinvent the genre, and outside of the cool band logo I wouldn’t actively recommend it to anyone, or rate it anything beyond tolerable or comfortably mediocre – but if you are curious sample a few track of this album. Now, seriously, why hasn’t Hammer Of Hate signed this band yet? This sounds a lot like Anal Blasphemy.
