    Blood Red Skies ()

Penumbra Soul is a melodic death metal band from... you guessed it, Sweden. Not that it matters, cos this sounds as mundane and horribly awful as any of the non-Swedish bands peddling this particular brand of toothless death metal. This crap is fucken terrible. So, this is the band’s second independently released album, and I like to think that there’s actually (for once) a good reason for this. How about you hang up your instruments and call it a day, guys? "Blood Red Skies" is the most uninteresting, by-the-book Gothenburg death metal release since The Quiescent. I have no bone to pick with Gothenburg death metal. The first two At the Gates releases are amazing, and so are the first three or so In Flames records for that matter. This album has none of that. Zero, zilch, nada. Why is it so hard to do melodic death metal right? Odin knows it can be done, and so do I. Look, you have been doing this shtick since 2008, isn’t it maybe time to search for a real drummer, and drop that absolutely horrible drum computer? If Mortician uses their drum computer better than you do, that is saying something – and most of it isn’t very good. I’m not drunk enough to enjoy this kind of shit. Why? Why did you bother sending this in? Were you looking to get slagged? Cos that is exactly what I’m going to do. Cry me a fucken river if you spent weeks writing these songs and a few hours recording them. I don’t care. I really don’t care. For once I agree with John Tardy, and that doesn’t happen often. Instead of being able to scan the internet for new Tessa Fowler pictures, I’m stuck with your stupid album. Oh sure, the front painting is kinda nice, and I realize the amount of work that goes into that – but for what? One of you was in Grief Of Emerald and Obligatorisk Tortyr, shouldn’t you know better by now? Holy crap, was this part of a supposed split album with Repulsive Aggression, cos this sounds equally as wretched and redundant. Now I don’t care whether you covered ‘Starlight’ by Muse. You will never have the songwriting chops of Matt Bellamy, no matter how many times you cover him. This is just what we needed, more pointless and badly recorded/mixed Gothenburg death metal. No. I’d rather fantasize about being with Kirsty Corner, or putting sun lotion on her curvy body – and that’s what I’m going to do. I’m not even going to grace this with a second listen.
