Hmm, I suppose it was inevitable. There always has been Black Sabbath worship bands of various calibers for a long time now. I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone figured out that by putting a woman behind the microphone that they’d be revolutionary, or novel. Hmm, it certainly has become a trend in the last 5 or so years. Blood Ceremony, The Devil’s Blood, Jess and the Ancients, Jex Thoth, Seremonia. An awful lot of these bands apparently are contracted by the epicenter of this trend, Finnish label Svart Records. Anyway, I’m not complaining. So, High Priest Of Saturn (thank Odin it’s not Rings Of Saturn), a three-piece from Norway and they are fronted by a lady called Merethe Heggset, who sings, plays guitar, bass guitar and Hammond organ. Other than being very Black Sabbath inspired, I get quite a The Doors vibe from the organ. She’s no Ray Manzarek (who recently passed away. You will be missed, dear sir!), but who is? Anyway, there are four songs on this album, about +40 minutes worth of material. The atmosphere is strong with this record. It’s hazy, smokey and tripped out, just think of all those early Jimi Hendrix records - yeah, tripped out like that. ‘Kraken Mare’ ends with an organ melody that is eerily similar to those awful chord strokes from Daniel White in the entirely inept "Oasis Of the Zombies" horror movie from the late Jésus Franco. ‘Crawling King Snake’ starts with a lengthy bass guitar intro. As you can probably gather by now this sounds a lot like that other Svart band, namely Seremonia. I still stand by what I wrote about Seremonia, though. Noora Federley is hot, and so is Merethe Heggset from this band for that matter. Really, Svart should do a Black Sabbath tribute band with Jess (Jess and the Ancients), Noora Federley (Seremonia) and Merethe Heggset. Come on! Make it happen, friends. You know you want to. Anyway. So, yeah - more Black Sabbath metal for those who can’t get enough from that sort of thing. I wonder where I left those blunts I rolled the other day. I will put away this record, and go search them.
