The more death - and black metal promos I get sent from fine people across the world, the more I want to listen to something else. Take for example this In-Graved thing here. In-Graved is the new band from Victor Griffin, the journeyman guitarist who most of you will know for his streaks in Pentagram and Place Of Skulls. For one thing, I admire the guy’s hunger and tenacity to just keep on plowing forward despite the fact that doom metal, or this hard rocking cousin thereof never was, and probably never will be, en vogue. I am not going to lie, or pretend otherwise - I’m not even vaguely familiar with any of his prior work. Maybe that’s why I enjoy this so much, in all its free-wheeling, fist-pumping, curb-stomping, hard rocking glory. Of course it is going to sound like Black Sabbath at some point or the other - that is a simple mathematical inevitability, but this is exactly the kind of thing you want to hear on a sunny day, sitting in your lazy chair, drinking a cold beer. Probably the lot of you will want to read what I have to say about the guy’s religious inclinations. Frankly, I couldn’t care less about them. Just like all those evil necro black metallers Griffin is just a person like everybody else. Whether he is a practicing Christian or not, is the least of my worries, or interests. For one, it is good to hear a life-affirming, positive message send with a hard rocking package. You wouldn’t believe how tired I get of all that nihilistic crap we have to put up with in the metal scene. So, uhm, yeah. This isn’t very original, or even novel sounding at this point. Griffin has been at this for the last three decades, did you honestly expect him to change his signature sound cos of his new solo venture? I hope not, cos otherwise you’d be headslappingly naive and stupid. No. From what I gather around the interwebs this supposedly isn’t his strongest work, but I can’t really tell, honestly. It’s every bit as enjoyable as anything else in this genre. So, yeah. Hard rocking and occasionally slow crawling proto-doom metal/rock from one of the genre’s key players is what you get here. What else? Geez, the handdrawn cover artwork is pretty amazing. Hmm, I think I will play this record again, instead of writing about it. It’s not like one critic’s opinion is going to sway you into changing your mind about this band, right? I thought so.
