When Nuclear Salvation debuted in 2011 with their independently released “The Beginning Of the End” I wasn’t particularly taken by it. Now some two years later the band is back with a slightly revised and expanded line-up, boasting vastly superior production values, impressive product lay-out and a performance that is better on all fronts. For one it helps that “Ruins Of Reality” is far more ferocious and furious than its immediate predecessor. Another thing working in the advantage of this second album is the cross-market appeal through sheer star-power. The album was mixed by Fredrik Nordström at Fredman Studio, mastering was done by Peter In de Betou at Tailor Maid Productions, the album design/lay-out was rendered by the much in-demand Pär Olofsson (Abysmal Dawn, Immolation, Inherit Disease, Malevolent Creation, Spawn Of Possession) and the track ‘Rise’ features a ripping guest solo by Steve Smythe (ex-Forbidden, ex-Nevermore). Bay Area thrash is still the general direction, but now there also seem to be more influences from melodic death metal in the tradition of early Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dissection and the likes. The singer’s vocals are also of a deeper register and thus come across as more aggressive, biting which, generally, give this album more of a death metal aura. One of the flaws of their debut that is carried over is the lack of interesting bass lines. I can’t fathom why metal bands bother with having bassists when they aren’t allowed to do anything remotely interesting. Is it really that much to ask for those folks to stop endlessly doubling the guitars and do little else? At the end of the day Nuclear Salvation is one step closer to unlocking their true potential. “Ruins Of Reality” is a definite step in the right direction. On their third album things might finally start falling into place for this young act. Here’s hoping...
