Hey kids! Did you know that Obituary has a new record out, and that both Allen West and Frank Watkins are on it? You can’t believe how exciting this is to type. Finally, after years of middling records that went from mediocre to painfully bad, they have finally redeemed themselves. Unbelievable, isn’t it? I have a hard time believing it myself. By Odin, they even bothered recording it in an actual, professional studio this time around, so it even sounds good to listen to. No more straining your hearing to hear all those great swamp riffs, no more tuning up your equalizers and bass levels to actually, you know, hear the bass guitar. In fact, it seems Donald Tardy has finally managed to break away from the monotonous redneck groove he specialized in post-“Frozen In Time”. Holy crap, I’m actually enjoying this in all its retarded and goofy glory. I’m not sure what has happened to John Tardy, though. He sounds very deep and guttural here, not his usual strained shrieking and gurgling. Now, I’m not going to knock on him for changing his vocal style, cos this is pretty good. What does bother me is that Obituary now suddenly has actual lyrics, with logical structures and, gasp, even choruses. Holy cow, when did that happen? Wow, look at this! Even Chris Barnes has some guest vocals on this disc. What’s this? Some Florida death metal circle jerk? Let me check where this was recorded, cos it actually sounds good. Uhm, oh. What? Why would Obituary go all the way to Finland to record an album?! Who okayed this?! Hmm, this CD does look at bit funny. I can’t see the iconic Obituary logo anywhere on here. The artwork is great, though. It appears to be handdrawn, a bit like Mike Riddick and consorts, and it says something strange here on the cover. Torture Killer? Why two album titles? Why would they want to name their album after veteran California grind unit Phobia and a Six Feet Under song? Oh wait, this isn’t Obituary, this is Torture Killer from Finland. What do you know? They actually managed to release another album. How quaint. For a minute there they had me fooled. Suppose I should actually read those press leaflets that come with these records every once in a while. Oh well...
