For the majority of their existence Lord Belial was always relegated to second-tier status. Death Tyrant, the new band by ex-Lord Belial founding brothers Anders and Thomas Backelin along with the Antonsson fraternity, is doing the same thing under a new paintjob. This is in fact a natural extention of Lord Belial, granted it is a lot less black metal at that – but it has the same sense of melody, atmosphere and general construction. "Opus de Tyranis" carries a torch for Naglfar ("Vittra"), Unanimated ("Ancient God Of Evil") and some of the chord progressions and vocals channel pre-"Reinkaos" era Dissection to a T. Not that the Lord Belial heritage is entirely left on the cutting floor. On the contrary, there are those typical melodies that you’ve come to associate with that band. Then there’s the use of acoustics, some light keyboards here and there – those will instantly transport you back to the times of "Kiss the Goat" and "Enter the Moonlight Gate". Just like its alma mater Death Tyrant isn’t out to reinvent the wheel, but they are doing a good spin on an otherwise limp and emasculated subgenre. How I long for that magical time in the mid ‘90s when death – and black metal could be melodic without doing concessions to heaviness, complexity or the inherent atmosphere of desolation and hatefulness. Sure, "Opus de Tyranis" sounds exactly what you think with this line-up, and while it might not contain another ‘Hymn Of the Ancient Misanthropic Spirit Of the Forest’ this record (and its preceding EP, for that matter) are leagues better than what 80% of the underground spews out into this subgenre. Death Tyrant is a band that deserves your time, so that they might grow into a bigger entity in the years to come. It might not sound especially technical, or even special at this point, but damn, records like this make me remember why I like this genre again.
