I wouldn’t call them ‘insolently bold’ exactly, but Effrontery (there also appears to be a band in Philadelphia, USA carrying this name) certainly knows what it is doing. Wow. I’m actually not entirely sure how I should say this. Here’s a young band from Hungary, playing melodic death metal – and it is actually good. I’m not sure why exactly this sounds so appealing to me. It takes a good deal of inspiration from the pre-Americanization of the Gothenburg sound, throws in some traditional and thrash metal stylings (mostly early Metallica and Megadeth) and fuses that with orchestral segues, violins, the occasional female guest vocals – the thing you’d typically associate with the most audience-friendly forms of doom metal. In a lot of ways it is reminiscent of bands like Fragments Of Unbecoming, early God Dethroned or Detonation (the first two albums). Thank Odin this sounds nothing like ‘metalcore dressed up as melodic death metal’, you know which bands I mean. Darkest Hour and Enforsaken spearheaded that particular movement. No, the early God Dethroned vibe becomes really obvious whenever they break into the sparse blast section, and you can hear the bass guitar plucking away in the background, that’s always a plus. Thank you for that. There’s also plenty of solo’ing, which is done competently and very tastefully. None of the noodling, wanky stuff here. Oh sure, every once in a while they’ll break into what arguably could be labeled "happy" territory with the melodies, but that is instantly set off by moody densely atmospheric church organs and glorious but solidly hateful riffing. This is actually very impressive, especially if you consider this band only put out a demo and EP locally just a few short years ago. There was even a video shot for the track ’The Effrontery’, probably the band’s ideological vessel. Sign me up for more of this, this is how this genre is supposed to be played. Aggressively, but with sophistication and finesse. Well done, gentlemen.
