Ghouls attack the church / Crush the holy priest / Turning the cross towards Hell / Writhe in Satan’s flames. No, this isn’t a tribute to early Morbid Angel exactly, but it is of the same time period - or wants to be, at least. So, here’s the thing. Chapel Of Disease (you really wanted to name your band Chapel Of Ghouls, admit it guys) is a young death metal upstart from Germany that like European (and US) death metal from the primordial days of 1988-1991. In fact, this sounds as a mix of "Consuming Impulse" and "The Rack" with an injection of "Leprosy", "Slowly We Rot", and "Altars Of Madness". The obvious influences of early Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Pestilence and Asphyx are hard not to notice, but in a lot of ways this young band displays a fire and vitality that is sadly absent in a lot of veteran bands of this genre, or those who care too much about noodling. In fact, I used to remember when all death metal sounded like this, and it hadn’t yet branched off into a million little subgenres and sub-subcategories. Hell, back then it was just thrash metal’s darker, meaner and faster cousin. Just like that genre it was a very musical thing, with interesting rhythm sections, grinding grooves, dark oppressive segments and wailing guitar leads/solos that tear and shriek. And the bass guitar can be heard here, which is a small miracle in itself considering today’s questionable production practices. Anyway, the singer really does his best Martin van Drunen impression, and it actually works most of the time. The lyrics take a good deal (or direct) inspiration from the writings of horror author HP Lovecraft, and that’s always a good thing in my book. The artwork is pretty neat too. So yeah, it ticks all the right boxes. Another year, another throwback death metal album. The only difference is, this one is good. So, be sure to pick this one up, guys and girls.
