I was originally going to start off with a funny quip of how much this band reminded me of Brodequin. As it turns out, this German unit is far more inclined towards Suffocation. For the longest while I heard people praising this band as some sort of genre saviors. People are idiots, we all know that. Defeated Sanity is certainly praiseworthy. This band is consistent, in delivery and concept. For crying out loud, just look at the album titles. "Prelude To the Tragedy", "Psalms Of the Moribund", "Chapters Of Repugnance", and now this - I sense a pattern. Anyway, there are a couple of guest appearances worth mentioning. This album has guest vocal appearances by Frank Rini (Internal Bleeding), AJ Magana (Disgorge, US), and Brian Forgue (Syphilic, Gutrot) with sound effects created by Jon Engman (ex-Brodequin). I suppose if you are into that sort of thing, there you have it. I honestly had a hard time telling everybody apart. It’s not like it’s the ‘90s anymore where death metal vocalists had their own distinct style. These days everyone wants to sound like Matti Way, Danny Nelson, Will Rahmer or Dave Rotten. I love the production on this. It’s organic, crunchy and you can clearly hear the bass guitar plucking away. I’m not too hot on the drum sound, but that’s a recurrent problem in modern productions. With a band so hellbent on channeling ‘90s aesthetics you wonder why they didn’t commission a painting by Dan Seagrave, Graal, Uwe Jarling or Andreas Marschall. Anyway, the artwork isn’t all that special or captivating, but I suppose it does what it is supposed to do. Not a revolutionizing record by any means, but at least it reminds you again why you liked this genre in the first place. That should be good enough for the most of you guys and girls.
