Oh precious bass guitar, where hast thou been all these years, ever so silent and despondent? Mine heart is black in thine absence. De Profundis hail from London, England and are unto their third record with "The Emptiness Within". This record is an atmospheric blending of different death metal styles. For one, it borrows heavily from early Dark Tranquillity (circa "The Gallery"), Death’s later period ("Symbolic") and that typical British strain of doom metal that was popular in the ‘90s. Say, My Dying Bride ("Turn Loose the Swans", "Like Gods Of the Sun") and Anathema. Not that the record is particularly aggressive (with a name like De Profundis, it is not strange to expect a Vader clone, correct?) or especially dark or brooding. In fact, it is neither of those things to a meaningful degree. Which makes it... I don’t know, technical? It certainly isn’t progressive because everything in this record has been done before and often better by bands a decade De Profundis’ senior. Does that make "The Emptiness Within" bad? Far from it. It’s actually refreshing to hear a band pull off a genre-blend as good as these guys. Of course, the fretless bass guitar is another big plus on this record - and the fact that the bass guitar is prominently featured helps a lot too. The vocals aren’t the most convincing and the clean vocals are even hilariously bad, but thankfully they are used sparingly. So long story short. Some good, some bad, but all the way competent without really being exceptional about it. In the olden days this would have been released by Candlelight Records. I don’t know how much of a compliment that really is...
