See, I like the idea here. Belgium has a long history with hardcore in the ‘80s/’90s with bands like Congress, Deviate, Liar, Sektor and Spirit Of Youth. Labels like Warehouse Records and Goodlife Recordings were instrumental in the H8000 community and Studio Midas was the recording mecca. Headshot is a young hardcore unit from Kortrijk, Belgium that gets the central idea right, but is hampered by subpar performance, sloppiness and a general lack of speed and dynamics to be truly impactful. The typical two-vocal styles is accounted for, the punk one takes on the lion’s share, but the brash hardcore shouts that form the backing add a lot of power. The biggest gripe and downfall for this record is that it isn’t pissed off or even angry enough for this genre. Or it seems awkwardly restrained on itself in order to be melodic. Either way it just doesn’t work in its current form. The thing is the basis for some really strong hardcore is present with this band. The point-counterpoint writing and very basic songstructures should actually help a band of this genre reach their much-coveted goal: writing the ultimate hardcore song. You could say that this is a young band, just starting out in the scene, and that would be true - but the mark is made and a line is drawn. The recording is good enough and they have the image covered in all its glory, now only the music needs to grow to that next level. Headshot really will need to pull out all stops for their next release and go straight for the jugular. I like hardcore, I really do - but this just isn’t aggressive enough. I want to have my ass kicked, not to be gently shaken. People who are into H8000 acts will probably find a lot to like here. I just consider them mildly promising at this point.
